Gonzo is a character in The Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, serving as the head of Tetra's Pirates. Gonzo bears a strong resemblance to Alfonzo, a train engineer from Spirit Tracks, which takes place around 100 years after the events of Phantom Hourglass, this is because he is confirmed to be his ancestor.
The Wind Waker
Gonzo is known to be one of Tetra's head pirates. He is first seen guiding the pirate ship towards Outset Island, leading the attack of cannonballs being shot at the Helmaroc King, who has kidnapped Tetra. After a rock successfully hits Tetra, she is dropped into the Forest of Fairies at the peak of Outset Island. Link eventually makes his way up to the forest and after finding Tetra, Gonzo will appear.
When on the ship itself, Gonzo is a bit annoyed by Link's presence. He feels that Link is getting in the way and that he should just head down below and hang out with Niko.[1][2] Gonzo will also communicate with his fellow pirates while guiding the ship. Gonzo is in charge of the ship's rudder, but will talk to Zuko, who serves as the spotter, at the very top of the ship.[3][4] When the Pirates arrive at the Forsaken Fortress, Gonzo will yell at Link, telling him to hurry and speak with Tetra.[5]
During the Endless Night, Tetra's Pirates head over to Windfall Island to get some Bombs from the Bomb Shop. Gonzo can be seen tying up the Bomb-Master Cannon within his shop. Gonzo is the one who smooth-talked one of the Postman to find out information regarding Bombs for sale at the shop.[6][7]
Mako does seem a bit surprised by Gonzo's uncharacterist wit that he showed. When he compliments Gonzo for smooth-talking the Postman, he mentions that this might have been the first time he actually showed such wit.[8] Mako makes a passing comment that with Gonzo's wits and Miss Tetra's smarts, if they ever got married and had a kid, that kid could be the greatest pirate to ever sail the seas.[9] This comment seems to embarrass Gonzo, who scratches his head and calls Mako an idiot and stupid.[10] Gonzo turns to Tetra, asking her to dock some of Mako's pay for such comments.[11]
After Tetra orders them to hurry up as they are going to set sail for Outset Island, Gonzo is a bit upset. He mentions that it has been forever since they have been on shore and he was hoping to grab some food for the night and then head off in the morning.[12] After Tetra sees Link spying on them from the corner of her eye, she agrees to allow them to spend the night and they'll take off first thing in the morning. As the pirates are leaving the Bomb Shop, Mako asks Gonzo what the password is.[13] Gonzo chastizes Mako for forgetting already, but then tells the password, which Link can overhear.[14]

Phantom Hourglass
Gonzo appears alongside Tetra and their fellow Pirates during the introduction of Phantom Hourglass. The pirates all play a very minor role in the game and after Tetra and Link try to board the Ghost Ship, Gonzo and the rest of the pirates are not seen again until the very end of the game. After Link defeats Bellum, Tetra and Link are reunited with the Pirates on the ship, where they continue their voyage across the sea.

Whatever you say is fine, Miss, is what I mean to say! ...It's just that, the boys were so excited to come to town, yeah? And I can't help but think it would be awful hard on them to leave so soon without a proper layover. So, what say we set sail tomorrow, yeah? What do you say, Miss? That treasure isn't going anywhere! You're with me, right, boys?! Who's for a night of fun?" — Gonzo, The Wind Waker.
