The Legend of Zelda Old Man Quotes
In The Legend of Zelda, there are many locations across the overworld and in dungeons where you will encounter the Old Man. Inside dungeons in particular, the Old Man will give some cryptic advice as to what Link will need to find or do later on in the game. This page will list each of the Old Man's quotes, along with an explanation as to what they mean.
Overworld Quotes
Location: Starting Screen.
Meaning: The Old Man is worried for our safety and offers a Sword. The sword isn't very strong, but will work for now.Location: Starting Screen.
Meaning: After mastering the Sword (completing two dungeons or gathering two Heart Containers) the Old Man offers an upgraded sword.
- The Old Man will say this when obtaining both the White Sword and Magical Sword.Location: Various.
Meaning: The Old Man will offer you either the Red Medicine or a Heart Container to help you on your quest. There are five Heart Containers in all.

Meaning: The Old Man offers this letter to deliver to the Old Woman. Showing it to the Old Woman will make her sell Potions.

Meaning: This Old Man runs a Money Making Game that we can play. The game can be found in multiple caves across the overworld.

Meaning: This Old Man, living peacefully in his home, just had his door blasted open. He isn't very happy about it and, as a result, charges a fine of 20 rupees to repair his door.

Meaning: This Old Man serves as a guide through the tunnels under Hyrule. You may take three routes to warp to any of four warps points.

Meaning: This Old Man is referring to the entrance of Level 8, found near the east end of Hyrule. Link will need to burn down a tree with a Candle to reveal the entrance to the level.
Dungeon Quotes
Location: Level 1: The Eagle.
Meaning: This can be taken to mean a variety of locations. These include:
- The east side of the dungeon where the dungeon boss Aquamentus is located. - One room further east where a shard of the Triforce resides. - The northeastern side of the overworld where the Money Making Game is located.
- One screen above the Money Making Game where a secret rupee is located.Location: Level 2: The Moon
Meaning: This refers to the dungeon boss Dodongo's weakness to Bombs.Location: Level 3: The Manji
Meaning: The Old Man is referring to an upgrade from the Sword to the White Sword, which is located above a waterfall in northern Hyrule.Location: Level 4: The Snake
Meaning: This refers to a waterfall in northern Hyrule. Upon walking into a waterfall an Old Woman will appear who will sell information.Location: Level 5: The Lizard
Meaning: This refers to the dungeon boss Digdogger's weakness to the Recorder.Location: Level 5: The Lizard
Meaning: This Old Man will sell you an upgrade to your bomb carrying capacity.Location: Level 5: The Lizard
Meaning: This won't mean anything to you for awhile, but within the final dungeon is an upgrade to our Arrows. These arrows are the only item that can kill Ganon.Location: Level 6: The Dragon
Meaning: This refers to the dungeon boss Gohma's weakness to the Arrows.
