Swords are recurring items in The Legend of Zelda series. The sword is one of the first weapons Link obtains, the other being the Shield. The Sword is also the most crucial weapon Link obtains, as it is used to defeat most foes he encounters. The Sword is also used to break open pots, trigger switches, and slash grass. In certain Zelda games, the sword can be used to detect whether a wall can be destroyed with a Bomb through the hollow clang sound it makes when hitting a suspicious wall. Link holds the sword in his left hand in most titles; he only uses his right hand in the Wii version of Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and Breath of the Wild. Swords such as the Giant's Knife, Biggoron's Sword, and the Great Fairy's Sword require both hands to hold. Link acquires many different swords along his quests, and he can also learn various sword techniques and skills.

It is the best sword in the game. The catch is, like the Giant's Knife, it requires two hands to carry. This means that Link cannot defend with his Shield while wielding this sword. It is given to Link by Biggoron after finishing a long Trading Sequence. It is a rather lengthy side quest, but it is well worth it as Biggoron's Sword does double the damage of the Master Sword.

Link begins his journey through Termina with his old Kokiri Sword. This is the weakest sword in the game, and the only one that it is required. However, it is highly recommended that Link upgrades it. It has two upgrades, and they are as follow: The Razor Sword, and the Gilded Sword.

Upon gaining access to Snowhead, Link can bring his Kokiri Sword into the Mountain Smithy located in the Mountain Village. If Link pays him 100 rupees, he will sharpen it, upgrading it to the Razor Sword (if Link has not defeated Goht yet, he must bring Hot Spring Water to thaw the furnace). This sword does double the damage of the Kokiri Sword, but it will break and return to the original after 100 swings. Link can get it re-upgraded as many times as he wants, but it will just keep breaking. Travelling back to Dawn of the First Day reverts the Razor Sword to the Kokiri Sword.

Blow up the boulders at the top and compete in the Goron Races. Note: This is only available if it is spring. After winning, Link will be given some Gold Dust. Give this Gold Dust to the smithy, who will upgrade Link's Razor Sword into the Gilded Sword. It will not work if Link still has the Kokiri Sword. Uses | Damaging enemies[1] |
Types
Basic Swords
Usually the first sword Link obtains. Examples of basic Swords are the Recruit's Sword, Oshus's Sword, Ordon Sword, Wooden Sword, Smith's Sword, Hero's Sword, Kokiri Sword, Practice Sword, and Fighter's Sword.
Legendary Swords
Link often needs a sword stronger than a Basic Sword to defeat tougher bosses or the final boss. Some examples of Legendary Swords are the Lokomo Sword, Phantom Sword, Master Sword, and Four Sword.
Optional Swords
Optional swords include the Giant's Knife, Biggoron's Sword, and the Great Fairy's Sword.
The Legend of Zelda
There are three swords acquirable in The Legend of Zelda, two of them being available before the first dungeon. Link can fire beams out of the tip of his sword if his heart gauge is full.
Sword
- Main article: Sword (The Legend of Zelda)
The first sword of The Legend of Zelda is simply called the Sword. It can be found in the cave on the Starting Screen, where the Old Man gives Link the Sword. It is the weakest sword in the game, but no further swords are required to finish the game.
White Sword
- Main article: White Sword
Once Link has six hearts, he can get the White Sword to replace the Wooden Sword. The White Sword does twice as much damage as the Wooden Sword. It is possible to get this blade before the first dungeon.
Magical Sword
- Main article: Magical Sword
The Magical Sword is the final sword in the game. It does three times as much damage as the Wooden Sword, and requires 12 hearts to obtain.
The Adventure of Link
Link possesses the same sword throughout The Adventure of Link, though he is able to deal more damage by leveling up his attack power.
A Link to the Past
"Sword
The Sword. It's the most important weapon Link will get. Forged from aged cold steel and sweat, each Hyrulian Sword is handcrafted by expert swordsmiths. A Smithy of particular merit lies to the east of Kakariko Village. The master swordsmiths who work there will be eager to help Link if he helps them first.
"
There are two swords in A Link to the Past, the Fighter's Sword and the Master Sword. The latter can be upgraded twice, first to the Tempered Sword, then Golden Sword.
Fighter's Sword
- Main article: Fighter's Sword
Link gets the Fighter's Sword fairly early on in the game. When Link first arrives in Hyrule Castle, his uncle will give it to him along with the shield, before passing out. It is fairly weak, and so does minimal damage against enemies.
Master Sword
- Main article: Master Sword
After collecting the three Pendants (The Pendant of Courage, the Pendant of Power and the Pendant of Wisdom) Link earns the right to wield the legendary Master Sword. This legendary blade has twice the power of the Fighter's Sword, and is required to complete the game. It can be upgraded into two more powerful weapons.
Tempered Sword
- Main article: Tempered Sword
The Tempered Sword is an upgrade from the Master Sword. After rescuing the second Dwarven Swordsmith from the Dark World and reuniting him with his partner, they will temper the Master Sword as a reward, increasing the power to three times that of the Fighter's Sword.
Golden Sword
- Main article: Golden Sword
After purchasing a Super Bomb from the Bomb Shop in the Dark World, Link can blow up an area in the Pyramid of Power only accessible via this bomb. Inside, Link can throw in his Master or Tempered Sword to receive the final Sword upgrade, the Golden Sword. This blade has twice the power of the Master Sword, or four times the power of the Fighter's Sword, and makes the battle against Ganon much easier.
Link's Awakening
L-1 Sword
In Link's Awakening, Link recovers his Sword on Toronbo Shores early in the game. It is the only required sword in the game, but it can be replaced with the Level 2 Sword, aka the Koholint Sword, on completion of a sidequest (below).
Koholint Sword
- Main article: Koholint Sword
Once Link obtains 20 Secret Seashells, he can go to the Seashell Mansion and get the Level 2 Sword. This sword does more damage than the standard sword and can shoot Sword Beams.
Ocarina of Time
There are technically four swords Link can acquire in Ocarina of Time; however, one of them is very fragile, so it breaks.
Kokiri Sword
- Main article: Kokiri Sword
Link gets the Kokiri Sword very early on in the game and keeps it throughout Link's entire childhood. It is very weak, and only does minimal damage to enemies. It is the only sword usable as young Link, and cannot be used by adult Link.
Master Sword
- Main article: Master Sword
After acquiring the three Spiritual Stones, Zelda will throw the Ocarina of Time while fleeing from Ganondorf. This instrument can be used to open the Door of Time located in the Temple of Time where the Master Sword rests. When Link pulls it out of the pedestal, he is deemed too young to wield it and is sealed, asleep, in the Light Temple for seven years until he has grown up into the Hero of Time.
The Master Sword does twice the damage of the Kokiri Sword, and is only usable by adult Link. Should Link choose to insert the sword back into the Pedestal, he will return to seven years in the past.
The Master Sword is the only weapon that can finish Ganondorf.
Giant's Knife
- Main article: Giant's Knife
The Giant's Knife is an extremely powerful blade that is so long, it requires two hands to wield. It is only acquirable as adult Link. If Link blows up the walls on the third tier of Goron City, he will eventually find Medigoron who will sell him this knife for 200 Rupees, but it is fragile and breaks after only a few uses. While Link can have it repaired for another 200 rupees, it will continue to break with use.
Biggoron's Sword
- Main article: Biggoron's Sword
Biggoron's Sword is the last sword Link can receive during his journey to save Hyrule. It is tied with the Giant's Knife, see above, power wise, but will not break.
Majora's Mask
There are four swords obtainable in Majora's Mask: Link's standard 'starting off' sword, and two upgrades. The fourth sword is an equippable item.
Kokiri Sword
- Main article: Kokiri Sword
Link begins his journey through Termina with his old Kokiri Sword. This is the weakest sword in the game, and the only one that it is required. However, it is highly recommended that Link upgrades it. It has two upgrades, and they are as follow: The Razor Sword, and the Gilded Sword.
Razor Sword
- Main article: Razor Sword
Gilded Sword
- Main article: Gilded Sword
If Link has enough time left in the current three day cycle, he can go to Biggoron for a Powder Keg lesson. Take the Powder Keg he gives Link, and carry it all the way to the entrance to the Mountain Village, but take a sharp right before entering the Village. The Gilded Sword does three times the damage of the Kokiri Sword, and will not break.
Great Fairy's Sword
- Main article: Great Fairy's Sword
The Great Fairy's Sword is the most powerful sword in the game, doing four times the damage of the Kokiri Sword. The catch is that it is an equipable item, meaning Link can not use his shield while handling it. This blade is given to Link by the Great Fairy after rescuing all Stone Tower Temple Stray Fairies.
Fierce Deity Sword
- Main article: Fierce Deity Sword
The Fierce Deity Sword is the sole weapon used by Fierce Deity Link. It shoots a Sword Beam, that can inflict up to eight times the damage of that of the Kokiri Sword
Oracle of Seasons & Oracle of Ages

Hero's Sword
- Main article: Hero's Sword

Master Sword
- Main article: Master Sword
The Legendary Blade of Evil's Bane, the Master Sword makes a return in The Wind Waker. After completing the puzzle in Hyrule Castle, Link can pick it up out of the pedestal in the basement. It does not possess the full power to banquish evil anymore, and must be restored to its original state. Restoring it does not actually increase its power, but it does enable Link to hurt Ganondorf. To restore it, Link needs to receive a prayer from the two Sages that watch over the Earth and Wind Temples (Medli and Makar). Only then can Link use it to finish off Ganondorf by stabbing it through his head.
Four Swords
There is only one sword in Four Swords, and that is the Four Sword. Originally the Picori Blade, this sword has the power to split the hero into four different Links.
Four Swords Adventures

There are six swords in The Minish Cap, except most of them are upgrades.
Smith's Sword
- Main article: Smith's Sword
Link gets the Smith's Sword fairly early. It is given to Link by the King during his first visit to Hyrule Castle. It is the weakest of all the swords in the game, but at least it gets the job done.
Broken Picori Blade
- Main article: Picori Blade
This legendary blade was broken by Vaati near the start of the game. Link cannot use it, as it is broken, but the king still gives it to him in hopes that he will get it reforged to restore peace to Hyrule.
White Sword
- Main article: White Sword
The first upgrade of the Picori Blade. It is forged by Melari while Link battles through the Cave of Flames. It is twice as powerful as the Smith's Sword.
White Sword (2 elements)
Once Link has obtained the White Sword, he can add elements to it to make it stronger. Link can almost immediately infuse the blade with the power of the Earth and Fire elements, making it slightly stronger. Using the power of this sword, Link can duplicate himself at certain tiles around Hyrule.
White Sword (3 elements)
Link can infuse his blade with the water element after completing the Temple of Droplets, making it slightly more powerful. Link can now split into three copies of himself rather than just four.
Four Sword
- Main article: Four Sword
After infusing the power of the Wind element into the White Sword, it becomes the more powerful Four Sword. Link can now charge up beams to shoot out of the tip of his blade, as well as separate into four copies of himself.
Twilight Princess
There are three swords in Twilight Princess, each more powerful than the last.
Wooden Sword
- Main article: Wooden Sword
The Wooden Sword is given to Link after Rusl repairs it. It is a very weak sword, taking eight hits to defeat a standard Bokoblin.
Ordon Sword
- Main article: Ordon Sword
Part of the gift that was to be delivered to Hyrule, the Ordon Sword is the second sword obtained. It is twice as powerful as the Wooden Sword, and is kept for much longer.
Master Sword
- Main article: Master Sword
Making another appearance, the Master Sword is the most powerful sword in the game. It is twice as powerful as the Ordon Sword, and is the only tool that can utterly defeat Ganondorf. It appears to have been made longer in this game. The Wooden Sword makes a return here and Link gets it fairly early on, after Rusl repairs it for him. It is quickly replaced though, by the Ordon Sword once Midna takes Link back to Ordon Village. Eventually, Link acquires the Master Sword after completing the Lakebed Temple. Link eventually places the power of two Sols inside it, enabling it to cut through darkness.
Phantom Hourglass
There are two swords in Phantom Hourglass. They are both required to complete the game.
Oshus's Sword
- Main article: Oshus's Sword
Link gets Oshus's Sword from the old man Oshus himself after breaking into his secret storage cage and "stealing" it. It is Link's average ordinary beginner sword: Not too powerful, but usable. It is the weakest of the two swords.
Phantom Sword
- Main article: Phantom Sword
Oshus's Sword is replaced by the Phantom Sword much later on in the game. The Phantom Sword is the only weapon able to defeat Bellum, and can be used to defeat Phantoms as well. It is given to Link only as a blade by Zauz after collecting the three Pure Metals. If Link gives Oshus the blade, he will forge it into the Phantom Sword, which is more powerful than Oshus's sword. It has the power to turn back time during the final boss battles.
Spirit Tracks
Like in Phantom Hourglass, there are two swords in Spirit Tracks, also both required to complete the game.
Recruit's Sword
- Main article: Recruit's Sword

There are a variety of swords in Skyward Sword, mostly forged from the Goddess Sword, with one exception.
Practice Sword
- Main article: Practice Sword
The Practice Sword is the first sword acquired in Skyward Sword. It is found in a treasure chest in the Sparring Hall. It is mostly used for practice on the logs for knights. It is the weakest sword in the game, and Link does not have it for very long.
Goddess Sword
- Main article: Goddess Sword
The Goddess Sword is the second sword acquired in Skyward Sword. After Zelda goes missing, Link will follow the spirit Fi to the Statue of the Goddess, inside which the Goddess Sword is held. This blade is twice as powerful as the Practice Sword, but is still fairly weak.
The Goddess Sword has the ability to create sword beams when raised skyward. This is called a Skyward Strike, and can be used to activate anything with the Goddess's symbol on it. Link keeps this sword for the duration of the first four dungeons.
Goddess Longsword
- Main article: Goddess Longsword
The Goddess Longsword is forged from the Goddess Sword. After defeating Koloktos in the Ancient Cistern, Link will encounter Farore's Flame, the first of the three Sacred Flames. Using the power of this flame, the Goddess Sword is able to be forged into this blade, which has twice the power and is slightly longer.
Goddess White Sword
- Main article: Goddess White Sword
The Goddess White Sword is an enhanced version of the Goddess Longsword, forged from the Goddess Sword. True Master Sword
- Main article: Master Sword
The True Master Sword is the final, and best sword in the game. The Master Sword is powerful, but does not have the power to repel evil. This sword is the only weapon that can finish Demise, and can load Skyward Strikes much faster.
