Soldiers, also known as Hylian Soldiers or Hyrulean Soldiers, are a recurring group of characters in The Legend of Zelda series. They appear mostly in Hyrule and serve the Royal Family of Hyrule by protecting them and their citizens. They also appear in others lands such as Termina and Labrynna.

A Link to the Past

Soldier (Gold)

The Gold Soldiers are Soldiers that have not yet been taken over by Agahnim's magic. They have no weapons, but wield huge Shields. These are the very first Soldiers that Link encounters in his quest, located on the outskirts of Hyrule Castle. They prevent Link from accessing much of the Overworld, and their primary purpose is to offer Link advice. They will tell Link how to use his Map, how to swing his Sword, and how to do other basic functions.

Ocarina of Time

Soldiers make an appearance in various parts of the world of Ocarina of Time. They guard Hyrule Castle Town, Hyrule Castle, and parts of Kakariko Village. They are most abundantly found protecting the garden entrance to Hyrule Castle. While most guards will happily partake in conversation with Link, the guards in the Castle Garden will immediately kick Link out if they spot him. Link is able to strategically sneak by the guards due to their poor line of sight. Once Link enters Hyrule Castle, he will have to sneak by the guards or will be kicked out of the Castle.

In Kakariko Village, Link will encounter the Death Mountain Trail Gatekeeper, who will only open the gate once Link shows him Zelda's Letter.

After acquiring the three Spiritual Stones, as well as the Ocarina of Time, Link will find a Wounded Soldier in the Back Alley of Hyrule Castle Town.

When Link becomes an adult, there are no soldiers to be found at all, presumably because they have all been killed when Ganondorf rose to power. The lone Poe Collector from the guard house is implied to be the same guard who patrolled the Guard House near the entrance of Hyrule Castle Town.

Twilight Princess

Main article: Hylian Soldiers

The Hylian Soldiers in Twilight Princess are the cowardly Soldiers that can be found in Hyrule Castle. When Link scares a group of them as a Wolf, they sometimes lose Hearts, Rupees, or Arrows. These Soldiers are cowardly and either scream or run away if Link scares them.

Spirit Tracks

The guards in Spirit Tracks can be found near Hyrule Castle where they wear green tunics. The leader of the group is the Guard Captain Russell who will give Link the Recruit's Sword after he properly trains with him. The rest of the group consists of the veteran Castle Guards, as well as the new Recruits.

A Link Between Worlds

The Soldiers in A Link Between Worlds can be found predominantly in and around Hyrule Castle. Various Soldiers can be found performing different tasks, from guarding the Castle itself, guarding Princess Zelda, or practicing attacks against scarecrows.

After Yuga takes control of Hyrule Castle, the Soldiers are transformed into paintings by his magic.

Two Soldiers can also be found throughout the game in Kakariko Village; one patrolling the Village and another resting at the Milk Bar.

Non-Canon Appearances

This section describes a subject that is or may be outside the core Zelda canon.

Hyrule Warriors

The Soldiers help out by fighting. At the start of the game, Link is fighting one for training.
