When Link is underwater, his only method to defeat them is by using the [[Hookshot]]. If they are spiked, he can use it to shoot them so that they become un-spiked. Also, Link can make them un-spiked by using his [[Shield]] against them.

Spikes only appear in the Water Temple. They are first found in the main room on the sunken sand of the lowest floor.

They can be defeated once their spikes are retracted. Underwater, Link can only defeat them with the Hookshot. If they are spiked, Link can shoot them with the Hookshot or use his shield against them to un-spike them, and then shoot them one more time to defeat them.
