As part of Zant's plan to take over Hyrule, the Shadow Beasts/Twilight Beasts were ordered to steal the light of the Spirits. When Link succeeds in removing the Twilight from the Lanaryu Province and restores the Spirit's power, Lanayru explains how the Fused Shadows, which Link is searching for, were formed by the power of a race of dark magic wielders, known as the Dark Interlopers. Among those living in the light, interlopers who excelled at magic appeared. Wielding powerful sorcery, they tried to establish dominion over the Sacred Realm. But then the Golden Goddesses summoned the three light spirits to intervene. It was then that the goddesses ordered us three light spirits to intervene. We sealed away the great magic those individuals had mastered. The light spirits sealed away their magic into the Fused Shadows, and the interlopers were chased across Hyrule into the Gerudo Desert, where they were then banished to the Twilight Realm by the Gods.

Biography
When Link visits the Lanayru Gorge where the Thunder Dragon is said to rest, all he finds are his skeletal remains. To revive him, Link has to transport a Timeshift Stone through the Lanayru Gorge where an old mining facility remains in ruins. Once Link transports the Timeshift Stone Cart to the power pedestal that uses the Timeshift Stone as a power source, the power pedestal will amplify the Timeshift Stone's effect radius, restoring the area around it to its once lush landscape. Upon reviving Lanayru, Link discovers that he is deathly ill and cannot teach Link the "Song of the Hero". He tells Link that the Ancient Robots were worried about him, so they planted a seedling from the Tree of Life in the Gorge. However, the seedling will not grow anywhere in Lanayru Province, and thus cannot grow the Life Tree Fruit that is said to cure all illnesses.

After relocating the seedling to the Temple of Hylia and allowing the fruit to grow in the Sealed Temple in the present, Link returns to Lanayru Gorge to heal Lanayru. He grasps the huge Life Tree Fruit by the stem and tosses it into Lanayru's gaping mouth. After the Thunder Dragon teaches Link his part of the "Song of the Hero", he tells the young hero to come back soon. If Link does, Lanayru will let Link participate in his Lightning Round mini-game, where Link may re-fight all the previous bosses, excluding Levias and Bilocyte, or explore the Silent Realms once again, for prizes. However, Link is not allowed to use any Adventure Pouch items other than his equipped Shield. Most of the prizes are Rupees or Treasures that can be obtained elsewhere, but there are also two unique prizes: a Piece of Heart after the fourth round and the indestructible Hylian Shield after the eighth round.

Lanayru is one of the four Light Spirits in Twilight Princess. This spirit protects Lanayru Province and resides in Lanayru Spring. His appearance bears a resemblance to a snake.[1] The name of this spirit is a reference to Nayru, the Goddess of Wisdom.[2]

Lanayru, after Link collects the final set of tears, congratulates him on finally restoring each of the four Light Spirits.[3] He then proceeds to mention the Fused Shadows, knowing that the hero has set out to acquire them. He says that the final piece of the Fused Shadows lies within the bed of Lake Hylia.[4] But before Link can set out and retrieve the pieces he so desires, Lanayru begins to explain some of Hyrule's history.[5] He tells Link about the Goddesses and the Sacred Realm.[6] He explains further on how word got out about the Sacred Realm, and a battle ensued soon after.[7] He concludes their discussion by stating that the Goddesses gave them the order to intervene, and to seal away the magic that Link now seeks to aid him on his quest.[8]

After some time passes, and Link has acquired the final piece of the Fused Shadows, Zant appears and attacks the hero and Midna. Lanayru appears in the nick of time, and proceeds to attack Zant, but he ultimately fails. Zant, being the villain that he is, uses dark magic to force the Light Spirit to attack Midna, gravely injuring her in the process. Before Zant can do even more damage, Lanayru utilizes his power to warp the duo to Hyrule Field, giving Link the chance to save Midna's life.

Along with the other three Light Spirits, Lanayru bestows Light Arrows upon Zelda to aid her and Link in the showdown with Ganondorf. Once the battle has finally ceased, Lanayru—accompanied by the other Light Spirits as well—heal Midna and restore her to her uncursed self.
