The Beamos is a type of mechanical enemy in the form of a pillar, that appear in multiple The Legend of Zelda games. They are usually used as a security system in dungeons and spin around controlling a certain portion of territory. They shoot beams at Link if they spot him, and the only way to dispose of them in most games are to shoot them in the eye with Link's Bow. Usually, their design suggests that they are ancient machines, but in Skyward Sword, Beamos look more futuristic than ever before.

Appearances

A Link to the Past

Beamos-Sprite-1.png

The Beamos made its debut appearance in A Link to the Past. In this game they were indestructible, stationary totem pole-like enemies that would constantly spin around, gazing around the room. If its eye saw Link then the eye would fire a beam, dealing one heart damage. The only two ways to defend against this impenetrable enemy is to either use the Mirror Shield, or hide behind a structure like a wall or pot.

Link's Awakening

In Link's Awakening, the Beamos look different, but they act the same as those from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Ocarina of Time

Watch out for its searching beam!
I bet it doesn't like smoke to
get in its eye!

These almost statue-like enemies are not extremely common in Ocarina of Time, but a few places they can be found are Bottom of the Well, the Shadow Temple, Dodongo's Cavern, the Gerudo Training Ground, the Spirit Temple, and Ganon's Castle. They do not pose much of a threat and their only attack is to shoot a laser from its eye towards Link. To defeat them blow them up with either a bomb, a Bomb Flower, or a Bombchu. They first appearance is in the second dungeon of the game, the Dodongo's Cavern.

Majora's Mask

What?! You don't know about the
Beamos? Don't let its beam
scare you. Just give it a good
blast!

In Majora's Mask, Beamos are found only in the Stone Tower area, including Stone Tower Temple itself. They haven't changed from Ocarina of Time, and, just like the previous game, they fire a beam at Link if he gets spotted by its eye while in the Beamos' territory. The best and only way to kill them is to throw a Bomb or Bombchu at them. Alternatively, Link can use the Blast Mask.

Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons

Beamos in Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons act very similar to the Beamos featured in Link's Awakening.

The Wind Waker

The Beamos has multiple different looks in The Wind Waker.

Blue Beamos

Blue Beamos are statue-like creatures that remain stationary. The eye at the top of their main 'body' will stay in one spot, unlike the Red Beamos, which rotates. This makes them easier to kill, since Link can stand near them to activate the eye without having to worry about getting hit. He can defeat them with the Skull Hammer, a bomb, or an arrow, but they are only vulnearble when they're attacking Link as well.

Red Beamos

Red Beamos are statue-like creatures that remain stationary. The eye at the top of their main 'body' rotates around, unlike the Blue Beamos, which remains stationary. If it sees Link, it will try and attack him with its laser. He can defeat them with the Skull Hammer, a bomb, or an arrow, but they are only vulnerable when they're attacking Link as well.

Four Swords Adventures

Beamos seen in Four Swords Adventures, are almost identical to Beamos in A Link to the Past.

Twilight Princess

Beamoses appear again in Twilight Princess, and are very different from past 3D Zelda Beamoses from the past. They can only be defeated by striking its eye with Link's Hero's Bow. They come in two variates; Brown and White.

Brown Beamos

Mostly found in the Goron Mines and other smaller caves, inclduing the Lake Hylia Cavern and Bridge of Eldin Cavern, this Beamos shoots fire beams at Link. They can be defeated by shooting an arrow into their eye with the Hero's Bow, which is found in the Goron Mines. After being killed, Link can drag them on a set path to cover switches or get to chests.

White Beamos

Located exclusively in the Temple of Time, the White Beamos shoot beams at Link. They can be defeated by shooting an arrow at its eye, or by being smashed by the Ancient Statue Link controls with the Dominion Rod. Because the Temple of Time is in a past state, the change of color of the Beamos could refer that overtime Beamoses lost their white color and became darker.

Phantom Hourglass

Beamos in Phantom Hourglass are indestructible continuously rotating beam turrets that only shoot at Link when he is in its line of sight. The beam itself comes out of the green, yellow, and white thing on the front. They are found in the Goron Temple.

Skyward Sword

FiIcon.png

Beamos are multi-layered totem-pole like objects found within the Lanayru Mining Facility and Sandship made up of two to three different electrified parts. The head of the Beamos turns in a mechanical way, as opposed to a fluent turning motion. These enemies can be defeated by horizontally slicing apart different sections of their body, and then stabbing the eye. Alternatively, Link can simply shoot an arrow into its eye with his Bow. The Beamos will shoot out a laser beam from its eye dealing electrical damage and temporarily paralyzing Link, but this attack can be deflected using a non-metal shield, like the Wooden, Sacred, or Hylian Shield.

Trivia

  • Beamos may be classified as the series' "turrets" as they are stationary and only turn in order to attack. Reference to this can be found in Twilight Princess's game guide's walkthrough when it refers to the Beamos as 'turrets'.
