Symin is a character from Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
Breath of the Wild
Symin is a member of the Sheikah tribe, and one of only five located outside of Kakariko Village. He can be found in the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab, where he develops Sheikah technology with Purah. After upgrading Link's Sheikah Sensor, he will give Link a quest to collect 3 Sunshrooms. Once completed, he will be able to sell Link pictures for the Hyrule Compendium.
When Link first arrives at the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab, Symin is astonished that Link has a Sheikah Slate.[1] However, he quickly realizes that despite having Stasis, Magnesis, Remote Bombs, and Cryonis, some of the Runes are missing.[2]
Symin already knows who Link is as he has gotten word from Lady Impa that a man holding a Sheikah Slate will appear and that Symin and Purah should help him out.[3][4] Despite initially appearing as the man in charge, Symin quickly tells Link that it is in fact Ms. Purah who is the director of the tech lab. Symin will begin to tell Link that despite looking like a young girl, Purah is actually an older woman. He stops himself and suggests Link get the full story by talking to Purah.[5][6][7]
After restoring the Sheikah Slate using the Guidance Stone Link can speak with Symin about the Slate, of which Symin explains that it was developed to bring peace and order to Hyrule. He fears of what might happen if it fell into the wrong hands.[8] Symin believes that the research done at the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab aims to unravel the mystery of the shrines and Divine Beasts. He hopes that the technology that they develop can someday be used to effectively seal Ganon.[9]
Despite spending all day and night standing near the bookshelves within the tech lab, Symin does have his own bedroom, about halfway up the spiral staircase, above the tech lab. Here there is a bed, some shelving, and other normal goods that are found within bedrooms. Despite this, Symin is never seen within his bedroom.
Sunshroom Sensing

As part of the Slated for Upgrades side quest, Link is able to give Purah three Ancient Screws. This will cause Purah to upgrade the Sheikah Sensor to the Sheikah Sensor +. Symin is greatly interested in this upgrades and really wants to see the upgraded Sheikah Slate.[10][11]
Speak with Symin and this will begin the Sunshroom Sensing side quest. He first tell Link to visit behind the lab and use the Camera to take a picture of a Sunshroom[12]
After capturing a picture of the Sunshroom, Symin will teach Link how to open his Hyrule Compendium and tune the sensor to a Sunshroom. He then tasks Link with finding three Sunshrooms and suggests visiting the nearby Retsam Forest.[13][14][15]
After returning to Symin with the Sunshrooms, Link can give them to him and in return, Symin will reward Link with three Hearty Truffles.[16][17]
Hyrule Compendium
- Main article: Hyrule Compendium
After completing the Sunshroom Sensing sidequest, speak with Symin again and he'll talk about another feature of the Sheikah Slate. There are still some pictures that are stored within the Guidance Stone and Link can use the Guidance Stone to add those pictures to the Hyrule Compendium.[18] Link can then use the Sheikah Sensor + to search for the item that was in the picture that came from the Guidance Stone. This will in turn ease any trouble Link might have in finding specific items.[19][20]
The first time Link wants to place his Sheikah Slate in the Guidance Stone, Purah will allow him to do it free of charge.[21][22] Link can fill up the rest of his Hyrule Compendium by taking pictures in the wild, or by using the Guidance Stone.[23] However, after the initial picture, it will no longer be free to use the Guidance Stone.[24][25] The second free picture given by the Guidance Stone may be given in any of the categories down below excluding Elite Enemy Pictures, though it's more common to receive a Fauna or Material picture.
Link can then speak with Symin and purchase pictures at the cost of 100 rupees a picture. They are divided into categories, as they appear on the Hyrule Compendium, with sections for Fauna, Enemy, Material, Weapon, and Other pictures. Later in the game, when Dark Beast Ganon is defeated, extra pictures for 11 Elite Enemies (15 in Master Mode) can be purchased for 500 rupees a piece. Elite enemies include Silver (4) and Golden (+4 in Master Mode) enemies, Master Kohga (1), the Blights (4), Calamity Ganon and Dark Beast Ganon. Master Mode also includes an extra non-elite enemy Sky Octorok, and the EX The Champions' Ballad includes another 3 in the form of Monk Maz Koshia, the Igneo Talus Titan and the Molduking.
When the Hyrule Compendium is completed, Symin gives Link a picture depicting a beautiful woman of the Sheikah Tribe, which is implied to be Purah in her youth. It wouldn't be until Age of Calamity that it's shown that Purah was indeed remarkably beautiful.

Trivia
- Symin is named after the persimmon.
- Three lines are drawn on the floor of the Lab, implying that Symin and Purah are constantly bickering about each other's work spaces, dividing the lab with said lines. The line closest to Purah is the most faded one, dividing the lab roughly equally. Considering that Symin is now confined to a corner after the third line has been drawn implies that, in spite of being the messy one, Purah has had the upper hand every time, since her mess encompasses most of the lab.
- Second only to Granté, Symin's selling of pictures for the Hyrule Compendium are among the most expensive commodities available in the whole game. However, the price varies depending on how many pictures one adds to the Compendium. However, even though Granté's items are the most expensive per unit, Symin's total stock is more expensive.
- Buying pictures from Symin is the fastest way to complete the Hyrule Compendium, as the task of searching for creatures and items to photographs takes a considerably amount of time and effort, with subjects that may be notoriously difficult to capture, like insects.

- ↑ Good morning. I imagine you've never seen so many books in one place. Pretty incredible, isn't it? We've gathered all of Hyrule's known literature on ancient civilizations here. As for the actual number of books, well... ...Hmm? Is that... That thing on your waist? Is that a Sheikah... There's no mistaking it. That's a real Sheikah Slate, isn't it?! I've never actually seen one in person! If you could just show me the runes on it, I'd be most appreciative. - Symin
- ↑ Stasis... Ah. Magnesis... Yes, yes. The Remote Bomb and Cryonis... And what else? Let's see... So that's it for runes... But... Hmmm... Strange... It doesn't seem like you have the basic runes... I don't understand why they're missing. There must be some reason... - Symin
- ↑ Ah! Where are my manners? I nearly forgot to introduce myself! My name is Symin. You are... Link, right? - Symin
- ↑ Lady Impa caught me up to speed. You see...we were told, "A young man holding a Sheikah Slate will appear. And you must do all you can to help him. He will be the hope that awakens from the Slumber of Restoration. His name will be Link." Oh, dear! I forgot to tell you something very important. - Symin
- ↑ Director! Listen, Ms. Director! This is a REAL Sheikah Slate! - Symin
- ↑ Oh, that's right... I haven't introduced our director. Ms. Purah happens to be right over there... As the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab director, Ms. Purah is the world's foremost authority on ancient Hyrule culture. - Symin
- ↑ I have the utmost respect for Ms. Purah and all she's accomplished. I'm honored to be her assistant. On that note, Link... You see, the director may look like a young girl, but... Well...maybe it's not my place to be telling you these things. You should talk to Ms. Purah herself. - Symin
- ↑ The Sheikah Slate is a device that our Sheikah ancestors developed to bring peace and order to Hyrule. The runes contained in your Sheikah Slate are also something we Sheikah developed. I'm so relieved to know that you'll be using this device for the betterment of Hyrule, Link. If such a device fell into the hands of evil... I shudder to think what might happen. - Symin
- ↑ The Hateno Ancient Tech Lab is where we Sheikah researchers study the scientific contributions of our ancestors. We aim to apply our findings to the world of today and to unravel the mystery of the shrines and Divine Beasts. I'm personally interested in exploring these entities from a geopolitical and structural-engineering point of view. The potential of using modern methods to reconstruct and iterate upon the past is simply too... Oh! Putting you to sleep, am I? Well, speaking in terms that may be of interest to you... To develop technology to effectively seal Ganon, the infinite evil that has plagued Hyrule throughout time. We believe this can be achieved by studying and improving upon the creations of those who came before us. - Symin
- ↑ Oooh! The Sheikah Sensor +! I reaaally want to see it... - Symin
- ↑ Yes, quite. So if you don't mind, how about showing Symin that spiffy Sheikah Sensor + later? - Purah
- ↑ Ah... You've acquired the Sheikah Sensor +! That should really come in handy. With that, you can sense things that you've captured with your Camera. Explaining won't do it justice-why not learn by trying? Let's give it a shot, so to speak. Let's see here. First, go take a picture of a sunshroom with the Camera. There is one behind the lab. - Symin
- ↑ Ah... Were you able to take a picture of a sunshroom? - Symin
- ↑ Let me confirm... - Symin
- ↑ It seems like you got a picture of a sunshroom! Excellent. Next, open your Hyrule Compendium and tune the sensor to your picture of the sunshroom. The Sheikah Sensor + will then be able to sense sunshrooms! The detailed instructions are written down in the book on the desk there. You should read them. This seems like a nice opportunity to ask if you'd mind bringing me three sunshrooms. You can find sunshrooms growing in Retsam Forest, I believe... The Sheikah Sensor + should make it a snap! - Symin
- ↑ Good evening. I see you've brought the sunshrooms. OK, now please hand over those three sunshrooms. - Symin
- ↑ Thank you. Here you go. - Symin
- ↑ Ah... Link... I've got some news that should be music to your ears! I've found a way to help you search for new objects using the Sheikah Sensor +! ... Please feel free to show your excitement. Anyway... As I was conducting my research, I found that there were still some pictures of the past left on the Guidance Stone! If you add those pictures to your Hyrule Compendium, you can search for their subjects with the Sheikah Sensor +. - Symin
- ↑ Hard? No, no, not at all... The Sheikah Sensor has been powered up to the Sheikah Sensor +. It can now access a picture registered in your Hyrule Compendium, allowing you to search for the subject of the picture. I trust you now see the benefit of adding pictures to your Hyrule Compendium. It makes it much easier to search for items you need, reducing one more burden you face in your travels. - Symin
- ↑ Now then, go ahead and place your Sheikah Slate on the Guidance Stone. - Symin
- ↑ I don't normally like to let people use my little Guidance Stone for free, but... I know of want to see what'll happen, so just this once I'll let it pass. - Purah
- ↑ Well... You heard her. Could you go and use the Sheikah Slate over there? Thank you. Let's go ahead and turn on the Guidance Stone. - Symin
- ↑ Oh! Wow. This is... It seems the Hyrule Compendium recovered a picture from the past! It appears the picture from the Guidance Stone was transferred to your Hyrule Compendium. You can't restore transferred pictures, so be careful of overwriting it. You can still in open slots by taking pictures with the Camera or using the Guidance Stone. - Symin
- ↑ And it won't be free from now on, either! Keeping a lab like this running as expenses, you know! - Purah
- ↑ Yes... What she said. - Symin
