Piranha Plants are enemies that appear in Link's Awakening. These enemies are Venus flytrap-like plants that have a red blossom and a green vine with four leaves and can be found only in the side-scrolling sections of two dungeons, Bottle Grotto and the Key Cavern. Similar to many enemies in Link's Awakening, Piranha Plants are based on the reappearing enemy from the Mario series. Piranha Plants are specifically designed after their appearance in Super Mario Bros. 3.

In the areas where they are found, Piranha Plants hide in pipes. They periodically come out of their pipe and reveal their blossom to attack Link, becoming vulnerable.[1] However, if he is on top of the pipe, the Piranha Plant does not try to come out of it. After coming out of it for a few seconds, the plant goes back into the pipe. When it is coming out of the pipe, Link can use a multitude of weapons to defeat a Piranha Plant like the Sword, Bow, and Bombs.

Unlike some of the plant's counterparts in the Mario series, they do not spit fireballs at him. Instead, contact with the Piranha Plant is their only form of attack. If he manages to come into contact with the enemy, though, the Piranha Plant only does damage to him if he touches the blossom, not the vine. As a result of this, Link can walk through the Piranha Plant's vine without getting hurt, but he must be careful as the Piranha Plant could go into the pipe as he is walking through the vine. Also, he can use the Roc's Feather to jump over the plant entirely.
