Fisherman is the term used to describe four characters in the The Legend of Zelda series. They all can be found in an area with water, and they spend a lot of their time fishing.

Appearances

Link's Awakening

In Link's Awakening, there are two Fishermen on Koholint Island.

First Fisherman

The first Fisherman can be found at the Fishing Pond in the north of Mabe Village. He will let Link fish for ten rupees.[1] If Link catches one of the larger fish, he will gain a Piece of Heart or 20 rupees.[2] If it is a small one, he will give him 5 rupees.[3]

Second Fisherman

The second Fisherman plays a role in the Trading Sequence. He spends his time Under the Bridge in Martha's Bay. However, he loses his Fishing Hook and cannot catch anything.[4] If Link gives Grandma Ulrira a Broom, she will hand him the Fisherman's lost hook, which she claims to have found by the river.[5] The Fisherman will gladly take the hook back, in return for his next catch.[6] His next catch turns out to be the Mermaid's Necklace.[7]

In the DX version of the game, the Photographer will appear Under the Bridge after Link returns the Fishing Hook, swimming in the water. The Fisherman will accidentally catch him and get pulled into the water. The Photographer will take a picture, saying, "Be more careful next time!"

Ocarina of Time

The Fisherman in Ocarina of Time runs the Fishing Pond in the northeast of Lake Hylia. He claims to be a pro fisherman.[8] For 20 rupees, he will allow Link to fish at the pond for as long as he wants, as long as he returns the Fishing Rod afterward.[9][10] Depending on the size of the fish, he will give Link different prizes. Link is his only customer, and without him, he admits that he might go out of business.[11][12]

When Link is a child, the Fisherman has a full head of hair. However, upon returning seven years later as an adult, the Fisherman is wearing a hat to cover up his newfound baldness. Link can use the Fishing Rod to snag his hat and take it away.[13]

The Fisherman does not approve of using other lures,[14] but he is amazed by the Hylian Loach, which can only be caught using the Sinking Lure.[15] He also scratches himself often, and he typically ends a sentence with "I'm serious!"[16]

A photo of the Fisherman from Ocarina of Time can also be seen on the wall of Hena's house in Twilight Princess, inside the Fishing Hole.

Majora's Mask

The Fisherman lives on the shores of the Great Bay in his hut in Majora's Mask. He says that he has been fishing in the bay for thirty years, and that his skill even surpasses even the Zoras.[17][18] However, he admits that lately, he has been having trouble catching fish, and that the water is so murky that he always ends up back at shore when he goes out on his boat.[19][20]

In the past, the Fisherman caught fish with the Hookshot that he found at the bottom of the ocean.[21][22] However, the Gerudo Pirates took it from him.[23] Link later obtains the Hookshot after sneaking into the Pirates' Fortress.

When Link first meets the Fisherman, he is in possession of a Seahorse. It is a rare fish, so he was planning on selling it at the Carnival of Time in Clock Town.[24] However, he promises Link that if he shows him a Pictograph on his Pictograph Box of a Gerudo Pirate, he will give him the Seahorse.[25] The Seahorse asks Link to take him to Pinnacle Rock, where he will guide him through the murky waters to the location of the Zora Eggs.[26][27]

After Link completes the Great Bay Temple, the Fisherman relocates to an island. There, Link can play a jumping game for twenty rupees.[28] He receives a Piece of Heart if he wins. The Fisherman then complains that he was planning on buying a larger boat, and that now he may go bankrupt.[29][30]
