Template:Character BowWow is Madam MeowMeow's most prized and adored pet in Link's Awakening.[1] He is one of three Chain Chomps that Madam MeowMeow owns. Unlike the Small Chain Chomps, BowWow is chained to a post outside the door of his owner's house in Mabe Village. He is treated by Madam MeowMeow similarly to how a Dog would be treated by humans, such as him being chained to a post in Madam MeowMeow's yard, Madam MeowMeow bragging about how nice BowWow's fur coat is,[2] and even the map telling passers-by to avoid the "Dog".[3]
Biography
Once Link obtains the first Instrument of the Sirens, the Full Moon Cello, from Tail Cave and returns to Mabe Village, he is informed by the Island Quadruplets that BowWow has recently been dognapped by the henchmen of the King Moblin.[4] If Link talks to Madam MeowMeow, she will frantically beg for Link to rescue BowWow.[5] Link soon finds out that the King Moblin and his gang are hiding in Moblin Hideout, a cave located in the Tal Tal Heights region.[6]
When Link travels to the hideout, the Moblins will then attack Link because of his suspicious look.[7] Nevertheless, Link defeats the henchmen and marches forth through their hideout to save BowWow. Once entering the room, the King Moblin will recognize Link is there to save BowWow and will attack Link.[8]
Once Link defeats the King Moblin, the room where BowWow is being held prisoner will be revealed. Link will untie BowWow's chain from the rock and will return to Mabe Village to bring back BowWow to Madam MeowMeow.[9] Full of gratitude, she asks Link to take BowWow for a walk around Koholint Island.[10]
While talking a walk with Link, BowWow can be used to eat most enemies in Link's way. In addition, the indigestible flowers of Goponga Swamp are one of BowWow's favorite things to eat on Koholint Island.[11] As a result, BowWow is the only individual that is allowed to enter Goponga Swamp.[12] In order for Link to obtain the second Instrument of the Sirens, he should walk with BowWow to the swamp, where BowWow can eat the Goponga Flowers blocking the entrance to Bottle Grotto, the second dungeon in Link's Awakening.
After Link defeats the Genie and gains the Conch Horn from Bottle Grotto, he must return BowWow to his owner.[13] Overjoyed, Madam MeowMeow will reward Link with a kiss for all he has done for her and BowWow.[1] If Link doesn't return BowWow to Madam MeowMeow, he cannot continue with his quest to awaken the Wind Fish thanks to Richard not allowing Link to talk to him while BowWow is in his small dwelling, postponing Link's quest until BowWow is returned.[14]
In the DX version of the game, there is a picture for Link's Photo Album of BowWow. After meeting the Photographer, Link can walk in front of BowWow to trigger the event where the Photographer will try to take a picture of the two of them.[15] As Link inches closer and closer to BowWow, he gets more and more aggravated, and he eventually chases Link away just as the Photographer takes the picture.[16][17] The picture is titled, "Link Plays With BowWow".[15]
Trivia
- BowWow can sniff up secrets buried beneath the ground to help Link search for Secret Seashells.[18]
- While Link is walking BowWow around Koholint Island, he can take BowWow to Toronbo Shores and BowWow will eat the pesky monkey there.
- While Link is walking BowWow around Koholint Island, Link can take him to Kiki the monkey and they will start to fight.[19]
- If Link trys to talk to the Photographer while walking BowWow, the Photographer will tell Link to come again alone, stalling the Photo Album Quest.[20]
- What Shigeru Miyamoto, Nobuo Matsumiya, Shigehiro Kasamatsu, and Yuuichi Ozaki all liked about Link's Awakening DX was BowWow which includes Link walking BowWow and also the photo of BowWow in the Photo Album.[21]
- The Chain Chomp Link receives in the original version of Four Swords was also named "BowWow".[22] However, this was changed to "Chain Chomp" in the anniversary edition.[23]
