Princess Zelda

Princess Zelda is the princess of Hyrule from The Legend of Zelda, the first game in The Legend of Zelda series (and, by extension, the first Zelda seen within the series).

The Legend of Zelda

Zelda is the Princess Regent[1] of Lesser Hyrule[2], "a little kingdom in the land of Hyrule"[3] which was once one single country[4].

This "little kingdom" existed in an age of chaos, and from this chaos came the monstrous Ganon and his army. When Zelda received word that Ganon had taken one of her kingdom's two greatest treasures, the Triforce of Power, she split the other - the Triforce of Wisdom - into eight fragments and had them scattered across eight labyrinths rather than allow Ganon to take both of the golden triangles. She then commanded her loyal nursemaid, Impa, to sneak away and find someone with the power to challenge Ganon himself.

Unfortunately, soon after Impa departed, Ganon captured Princess Zelda herself, raging at his loss of the Triforce of Wisdom. Imprisoned deep within his base on Death Mountain, there was little Zelda could do but sit and hope for rescue.

Rescue, however, finally came in the form of Link who - having saved Impa and heard what was happening from her - had braved the labyrinths, reunited the Triforce of Wisdom and slain Ganon. On seeing her rescuer, and with the Triforce of Wisdom once again in her possession, she thanked Link profusely and dubbed him the "Hero of Hyrule".

The Adventure of Link

Only a passing mention of this Zelda is made within The Adventure of Link Story, referencing her as Impa's charge. Her fate after the events of The Legend of Zelda is unknown.

Trivia

  • While Zelda's dress in art for The Legend of Zelda is shown as pink, the dress of her in-game sprite is tied to the colour of Link's in-game tunic when he rescues her, and as such may be green, blue or red... but never pink!
