Not much is known about the inevitable next Zelda release on the Nintendo 3DS. Referred to by most fans simply as "Zelda 3DS", there has been much speculation as to what this game could actually be, including rumors such as: More remakes, a sequel to Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass, or a new game in the style of Ocarina of Time 3D. Previous rumors about a multiplayer Zelda game[citation needed] somewhat came true with the re-release of Four Swords, although that was not strictly a 3DS release. Unless a new Four Swords is in the works or something like it, a new multiplayer Zelda seems out of the question.

Development

Miyamoto did imply in an interview with French website GameBlog.fr that he is working on a new Zelda game, which is likely a 3DS title:

"We must understand that our main job is to sell games. So personally I do not play as much as I want. I am currently very busy producing a new Zelda, a new Mario and a new Mario Kart on 3DS and a new Pikmin."

— Miyamoto[1]

However, that quote was translated from Japanese to French to English, so it's difficult to discern how seriously it should be taken. It implies these are all going to be 3DS titles, but it could be just as easily taken to mean only the Mario Kart title is confirmed for the 3DS, and that's not even factoring in potential translation errors. Still, it does seem to suggest full confirmation that a new 3DS Zelda is being worked on by Miyamoto himself.

Use of 3D in Zelda

On the subject of an original title on the 3DS, Aonuma gave GameInformer a response that could indicate that development is already underway:

"Of course we've thought about it. I'll give you one hint, but maybe you won't understand it. It will be a game in which having 3D will mean something."

— Aonuma[2]

A Link to the Past Remake

However, another interesting quote has surfaced, also from Miyamoto:

"Are there any plans to adapt other older Nintendo games for the 3DS console?

Not really. We would like to create more new titles. For example, this year we are making Super Mario 3D, but it’s not really a remake of [the Wii's Super Mario] Galaxy. The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past could be one of them. I think it would be good to see that world with a layered 3D effect.
"

— Miyamoto[3]

This quote implies that their exact plans for the project are not set in stone. At one point he implies that they want to make new titles, but then he suggests an A Link to the Past remake for the 3DS.

Majora's Mask 3D

Main article: Operation Moonfall

At the 25th Anniversary Symphony Concert in London, Aonuma told the Portuguese e-zine MyGames[4] that he is currently working on a new Zelda title for the 3DS, and that it will be an original title, not a remake. He didn't feel it was right to release two remakes so close together, but a Majora's Mask remake is still a possibility for the future.

All in all, exactly what the future for Zelda on the 3DS holds is a mystery. We can only speculate at this point.
