A Champion is a term used in Breath of the Wild to refer to one of a group of individuals of exceptional skill tasked with piloting one of the Divine Beasts.[1] The term Champion also refers to Link as well, as he is called this repeatedly by many of the residents of Hyrule on his journey.

10,000 years prior to Breath of the Wild, the Sheikah had created the four Divine Beasts and four unknown pilots were chosen to control them and work with the hero and the princess of that era to fight the ancient evil. When Calamity Ganon emerged, they fought vigorously and together with the Guardians, they successfully managed to seal Calamity Ganon for 10,000 years. These Champions were only seen in the ancient tapestry and during the tale that Impa tells, but never in the game itself and it was never specified if their races correspond to the respective current Champion.

When King Rhoam hears of a prophesy of Calamity Ganon's return, he had the Divine Beasts and the Guardians excavated from the earth that they had been long buried over several millennia. Eventually, he selected four elite warriors who would assume control over the Divine Beasts to counter Ganon and sent his daughter, Princess Zelda in inquire their part in fulfilling their role. The four Champions in Breath of the Wild are Mipha of the Zora, Daruk of the Gorons, Urbosa of the Gerudo, and Revali of the Rito. She first pays a visit to Revali, who is struggling hard to master his new ability, Revali's Gale and was hard on himself when he messed up. After noticing the princess, he deduces that she needs him to defeat Ganon and he accepts his call to pilot Divine Beast Vah Medoh, before trying to summon an updraft again and he was able to excel. Champion Revali's Song  Next, she travels to Death Mountain to ask Daruk for his help through becoming Divine Beast Vah Rudania's pilot, who happily does so and tells her not to go out without a group of Gorons at her side, before encountering several Bokoblins attacking someone, which is revealed to be one of his worst childhood nightmares, a Hylian Retriever. Champion Daruk's Song  She then goes to Zora's Domain to inquire of Mipha's assistance in becoming Divine Beast Vah Ruta, which she accepts and asks for the names of the other Champions which Zelda goes through them all, but never calls Link by name and Mipha later gives her brother Sidon a ride up the waterfall and tells him to protect Zora's Domain in case something happened to her on the battlefield. Champion Mipha's Song  Lastly, Zelda heads to Gerudo Town at sunset to speak with Chief Urbosa to ask of her assistance which she immediately accepts due to the Yiga Clan planning on Ganon's revival and have an interest in stealing her Thunder Helm, and later reveals that she calls her "little bird" due to her friend, also Zelda's mother, having once referred to Zelda by this name. Champion Urbosa's Song

The Champions are later assembled at Hyrule Castle where the Champion inauguration ceremony takes place as King Rhoam gives a speech as his daughter had given them their blue Champions' Garbs. They later lounge outside after a long day and later had a photo taken of them by Purah, with Daruk pulling everyone together at the last moment. The Champions' Ballad (Memory)  Eventually, Daruk makes a suggestion that Link should have his personal ceremony since he is being appointed as Zelda's personal knight. However, it wasn't going as optimistic they were expecting. Subdued Ceremony .

All of them perished while piloting their Divine Beasts in the attack of Calamity Ganon 100 years before the events of Breath of the Wild.[2]
