Dowsing is an all new feature in Skyward Sword.

By using the Goddess Sword, Link will be seen in a first-person-view, and Fi will lead Link towards whatever he chooses from a list, in a hot-and-cold fashion.

It appears to be required in order to find many key elements in the story. For instance, as seen in the Dowsing Trailer, Link uses Dowsing to search for Zelda, and is actually led to the Skyview Temple, where Zelda's aura is located at the time.

Dowsing is also upgraded after acquiring the Goddess White Sword, making it so that you have more dowsing slots.
