Kholdstare

Kholdstare[1] is the Boss of the Ice Palace,[2] the fifth Dungeon of the Dark World in A Link to the Past. It is a large white ball, which in the second phase of the battle splits into three. Furthermore, it is covered in a large amount of thick ice.

Strategy

The first phase of the battle consists of Kholdstare just being in a block of ice while making ice fall from the ceiling.[3] To melt the block of ice, use the Fire Rod eight times.[4][5] Alternatively, Link can use the Bombos Medallion a single time to melt the ice.[6] Once Kholdstare is exposed, it is revealed to have three bodies,[7] which all start to move around the room. In order to damage them, Link can use either his sword or the Fire Rod;[8] the sword is easier, but the Fire Rod is more effective. This boss battle is much easier if Link has acquired the Magic Meter upgrade from Kakariko Village. Fairies and such might help as well, but magic is more important in this fight. After defeating all three of the bodies, Kholdstare is defeated, leaving behind a Heart Container. Link can then grab the container, as well as the fifth Crystal.[9]

Trivia

  • Due to a coding glitch, the animation of the ice around Kholdstare melting was not implemented. Instead, the ice just disappears after a few frames, which is a lot less aesthetically pleasing. This was fixed in the GBA port.[10]
