The Mystery Man is a character that appears in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. He has a hobby and curiosity of collecting Poes.

Appearances

Ocarina of Time

In Ocarina of Time, the Mystery Man lives in Castle Town inside his Ghost Shop. Link encounters him as an adult. He collects Poes in a cage. After Ganondorf demolished Castle Town, the Mystery Man thought that it was a perfect time to start a shop there. If Link brings him a Big Poe that is found outside in Hyrule Field, the Mystery Man puts 100 points on his card and gives him 50 Rupees. Furthermore, after Link collects 10 Big Poes total, the Mystery Man rewards him with an Empty Bottle. When Link is a child and goes to the room at night, a soldier will be inside it. If Link talks to him, he will mention that he loves poes. It is possible that the soldier and the Mystery Man are the same person.

Majora's Mask

In Majora's Mask, Link encounters the Mystery Man occasionally throughout the game. He also runs a mini-game inside the Spirit House in Ikana Canyon. The objective is to defeat all the Poe Sisters to be rewarded with a Piece of Heart. Unlike his Ocarina of Time counterpart, he appears more often in the game, giving Link information about certain things. The first time Link encounters the Mystery Man is on the Road to Ikana sitting atop the hill that leads to Ikana Canyon. However, he doesn't allow Link to enter Ikana Canyon yet, but if Link wears the Garo's Mask while speaking to him, he summons a withered tree near the ledge of the hill which allows Link to enter Ikana Canyon by latching on to it with the Hookshot.[1] He also explains that Ikana Canyon is where regretful spirits without serenity reside.[2][3][4][5][6] Link can then enter Ikana Canyon and participate in his mini-game. Link encounters him again in the Secret Shrine, which is found behind the waterfall in Ikana Canyon. He informs Link that he succeeded to dispatch the spirits in Ikana into serenity and that the creatures in the Secret Shrine have been awaiting Link for a long time.[7][8][9][10][11] After Link defeats all the four mini-bosses in the Secret Shrine, he once again encounters the Mystery Man.[12][13] After speaking to him, he disappears, leaving behind a Treasure Chest containing a Piece of Heart.[14][15]
