The Triforce is a recurring item in the Zelda series, as it is typically the item Ganon is trying to get his hands on. Each shard stands for a trait, Courage (Link), Wisdom (Zelda) and Power (Ganon). It is said to be created when the three goddesses left Hyrule, leaving behind the Triforce.
Legend
We are told by the Great Deku Tree that the Triforce was left behind by Three Golden Goddesses: Din, The goddess of Power, Nayru, The goddess of Wisdom and Farore, The goddess of Courage.
