Template:Item Cawlin's Letter is an item from Skyward Sword. It plays a crucial part in a sidequest involving Link, Cawlin, Karane, and Pipit. There are two alternate endings to the sidequest, depending on what the player chooses to do with Cawlin's Letter.

Beginning Story

After Henya and Dovos both report a strange voice coming from the restroom at night,[1][2] Link can investigate the situation and finds out that this voice is asking for paper.[3] The next morning, Cawlin appears near the restroom holding his letter, mumbling to himself.[4] If Link talks to him, he requests that Link takes his love note to a girl he likes named Karane.[5][6] He warns Link not to give his letter to it.[7]

First Ending

Link can choose to ignore Cawlin and give the letter to the voice at nighttime. When the voice hears that he has paper, it gladly lets him inside of the restroom.[8] Opening the door reveals that the voice is coming from a hand in the toilet. He can then offer the paper to the ghost. Initially, she is reluctant to take it because she notices that it is a letter, but she finally accepts and thanks Link.[9][10]

If Link talks to Cawlin the next day, he yells at him and runs off sobbing.[11][12][13] Then, during the next evening, the hand is seen by Cawlin's bedside, stroking him as he shivers in his sleep.[14] She says that she was so taken by the words in the note that she fell in love.[15] Link will then receive five Gratitude Crystals from her.

Second Ending

Link can instead heed Cawlin and give the letter to Karane like he was asked to. She is at first excited, believing it is from Pipit, whose attentions she really wanted, but then she discovers that it's actually from Cawlin and is less thrilled.[16][17][18] Link can report back to Cawlin and tell him that he gave it to Karane, and Cawlin will hurry over to ask her what she thought of it.[19]Subsequently, Link can tell Pipit about the letter, and he will admit that he's slightly bothered by it.[20][21][22] Link can then return to the classroom to see Cawlin asking Karane,[23][24] but Pipit will arrive, declaring his own desire to go out with Karane.[25] Karane will eagerly say yes, and Cawlin will run off crying.[26][27]

Link will then receive five Gratitude Crystals from Pipit.[28]
