Dr. Left is a resident of Horon Village where he can be found doing his research in a house at the southeast corner of town. When Link first encounters Dr. Left, he is having trouble reading because of the dim light. He asks Link if he can light his fire.[3] After Link acquires the Seed Satchel and Ember Seeds from the Gnarled Root Dungeon, he can light the torch in the room. Dr. Left thanks Link for doing so and gives him the Cuccodex.[4] This is the first item in the trading sequence and is later traded for the Lon Lon Egg.

Link can return to Dr. Left at any point, and the biologist passes on an assortment of knowledge about a wide range of species that Link encounters along his journey. All of his knowledge begins with the same phrase, "My books tell me...". A list of his statements can be found below.

  • My books tell me a total of four golden beasts will appear in a particular place in a particular season...[5]
  • My books tell me a fellow named Ricky can jump small holes and cliffs in just a single bound.[6]
  • My books tell me a fellow named Ricky packs a powerful punch that unleashes twisters when charged up.[7]
  • My books tell me a fellow named Dimitri eats almost anything, even monsters.[8]
  • My books tell me a fellow named Dimitri is a strong swimmer, who can swim even upstream against powerful currents.[9]
  • My books tell me a fellow named Dimitri can be picked up, carried and even thrown about.[10]
  • My books tell me a fellow named Moosh can float in midair for short periods of time. They call that hovering.[11]
  • My books tell me a fellow named Moosh can also save energy while floating to hit the ground with great force![12]
  • My books tell me you must use a shield to knock back the seed shot by a Deku Scrub in order to defeat it.[13]
  • My books tell me of a branch of Deku Scrubs that engages in trade. They're called Business Scrubs.[14]
  • My books tell me there is a beast called a Whisp that jinxes you when you touch it. You won't be able to draw your sword![15]
  • My books tell me there have been sightings of a Deku Scrub that loves music.[16]
  • My books tell me there is a beast that eats shields.[17]

The Minish Cap

Dr. Left is found in the western part of Hyrule Town. He is a researcher of the Picori legend.[18] In the beginning of the game, his door is locked, and if Link attempts entry, Dr. Left tells him that he is busy with his research and not to be disturbed.[19] His house is accessible by entering a Minish-sized hole at the front of his house, but there is nothing inside except for another Minish-sized hole that leads to the room of a Town Picori. After Link has completed the Fortress of Winds and has accessed the Royal Hyrule Library, Dr. Left's opens his door so that Link can search for the overdue library book that Dr. Left has kept entitled Legend of the Picori. Dr. Left does not know where he put the book, and since he is busy, he tells Link to find it.[18] In order to collect the overdue book in his house, Link needs the Power Bracelets and the White Sword.
