The Adult Timeline is one of three branches of the series continuity, following the Adult Ending of Ocarina of Time.

The Era of the Hero of Time (Adult Era)

The Adult Timeline starts toward the beginning of Ocarina of Time, when Princess Zelda first meets Link and instructs him to gather the Sacred Stones and open the Gate of Time in an effort to beat Ganondorf to the Triforce.[citation needed] Although these events technically flow naturally from the preceding period, the distinction is made to differentiate it from the Child Timeline, which is an abnormal branch resulting from Link being sent back from the future and changing these events.

The Adult Timeline portion of Ocarina of Time consists of Link completing the remaining dungeons after Inside the Deku Tree, defeating Ganon, and culminating in the Adult Ending. Zelda sends Link back in time causing the creation of the Child Timeline, but she remains on the Adult Timeline where Link no longer exists and Ganon is sealed in the Sacred Realm.[citation needed]

The Era without a Hero

After finishing Ocarina of Time, Princess Zelda sends Link back in time, creating a split in the timeline. In the Adult Timeline, Zelda stays in the future though Link has been sent back to his own time after defeating Ganondorf and leaving him imprisoned. The later games in this timeline include The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. Some years after Ocarina of Time, Ganondorf is revived, and the people of Hyrule expect Link, the Hero, to return. When he doesn't, the goddesses flood the land of Hyrule to rid it of monsters. However, in Wind Waker, Link finds that Hyrule isn't completely flooded, rather it is in a small "bubble" at the bottom of the sea. Link breaks the seal on Ganondorf by pulling the master sword. Link then defeats Ganondorf again, causing Hyrule to be truly flooded. At the end of The Wind Waker, and throughout The Phantom Hourglass, Link and Zelda (Tetra) go looking for a "New Hyrule". Spirit Tracks takes place about 100 years after they found New Hyrule, and the Master Sword and Ganondorf are unlikely to be found in this land.
