The first time (and ONLY the first time) this amiibo is used, Epona will appear. It is strongly recommended to ride her to a nearby stables and register her as quickly as possible. She has maximum stats in all categories. Be careful with her, as she CAN die, and you cannot use the amiibo to get her again. There is a Horse Fairy that will resurrect horses after they have died, but it is unknown if Epona is eligible for this type of resurrection.

* You can also whistle (same way you call a horse) to interrupt Wolf Link's current action and have him return to you. Since you can only target him to tell him to stay when he is close, this is helpful. A last ditch effort to get him to return to you is to resummon him, which will work even if he is still currently summoned. This is recommended if he is about to get himself killed chasing a [[Guardian Stalker]] for instance, as those can kill even a 20-heart Wolf Link in two hits. And if all else fails, and you really want to keep him alive (so as to avoid the day timer before you can summon him again), teleport somewhere. As long as Wolf Link is still alive when you teleport, he will be able to be resummoned.

Note that the best method (for ''Breath of the Wild'''s sake) is to first collect the maximum of 20 hearts (all heart containers and pieces) before ever doing the wolf trial, then do the 5-level trial, and use the Wolf Link amiibo to heal yourself right before you complete the trial. It is unknown if completing the 15 and 30-level versions are necessary. However, all three results are recorded on the amiibo, and ''Breath of the Wild'' will use the highest result of the three.

Unlocking Amiibo

Before amiibo can be used, you must first acquire the Paraglider and leave the Great Plateau. Once this is done, the option to enable amiibo will be available in the system menu.

After turning on amiibo in the system menu, a new 'Rune' will be in the rune menu, all the way to the right. Use this rune and target an open spot on the ground. This preps the game to receive an amiibo. Tap the amiibo figure to the controller as usual to activate the amiibo.

Amiibo can only be used once per real-life day. This seems to reset at midnight based on the time settings on the console.

All amiibo will work with Breath of the Wild, even ones that are not related to the Zelda series. However, non-Zelda amiibo will simply give random items and have no specific exclusives.

Many of the Zelda-series amiibo have a chance to give exclusive items in addition to their first-time use bonus. It is therefore worth it to use them daily until these exclusive items are collected, if desired.

Smash Brothers Link (Twilight Princess)

The first time (and ONLY the first time) this amiibo is used, Epona will appear. It is strongly recommended to ride her to nearby stables and register her as quickly as possible. She has maximum stats in all categories. Be careful with her, as she CAN die, and you cannot use the amiibo to get her again. There is a Horse Fairy that will resurrect horses after they have died, but it is unknown if Epona is eligible for this type of resurrection.

After the first use, some minerals and a chest will appear instead on any subsequent use of this amiibo. The chest will have a rare chance to contain the hat, chest, or legs of Link's outfit in Twilight Princess.

Wolf Link

Wolf Link is an exception to all other amiibo. Activating the Wolf Link amiibo will summon Wolf Link as a companion. The following are points of information that relate only to Wolf Link:

  • Wolf Link can be summoned as many times as you wish, unless he dies. Then he will be put on the same once-a-day timer as all other amiibo. If he dies, you can load an autosave or manual save where he was still alive, to circumvent the timer.
  • Wolf Link can be healed if he has taken damage. Simply drop anything edible near him. If he is not at full health, he will seek out edible items on his own (including rare items), unless commanded to stay, or you pick them up before he eats them.
  • Whether Wolf Link dies or not, he is healed to full health on the daily reset timer for all amiibo (unless he is actively summoned at the time.)
  • Wolf Link is very aggressive. If he sees something that can be attacked, he will attack it. He will wake up sleeping enemies, including world bosses. If you do not want him to do so, command him to stay.
  • Just because an enemy has noticed Wolf Link, does not mean he has noticed you. It is possible to get behind an enemy focusing on Wolf Link and Sneakstrike them from behind for critical damage. This is more difficult if the enemy has noticed you both, however, as an enemy that has noticed you both will tend to focus on you instead of Wolf Link.
  • To command Wolf Link to stay, target him and press A. Do so again to tell him to follow you. If you tell him to stay, and then move far enough away that he teleports to you, he will revert to follow mode and must be told to stay again.
  • You can also whistle (same way you call a horse) to interrupt Wolf Link's current action and have him return to you.
