Items are a recurring mechanic in The Legend of Zelda franchise.

Overview

In all Zelda games, items refer to anything stored within the player character's inventory. There are several types of items:

  • Manual Items: Manual items perform a specific function when assigned to one of the buttons on the player's controller. For example, in The Legend of Zelda, the player must assign most items to either the A or B button on the controller via the inventory. Examples include the Sword and Bow.
  • Automatic Items: Automatic items do not need to be equipped, instead granting a passive ability once obtained that remains for the rest of the playthrough. Examples include the Raft or Stepladder.
  • Consumable Items: Certain items, namely Bombs or Arrows, are in limited supply and can only be used a limited amount of times before becoming depleted. The player can often find additional of these items in the world or buy them from Shops.
  • Dungeon Items: Each Dungeon in a Zelda game contains one or two unique Items - these are known as the dungeon's "dungeon items". Dungeon items are often required to complete the dungeon, and enable the player to solve certain puzzles or access new areas in the world.
  • Key Items: Key items are obtained at specific points in the plot. They serve no gameplay purpose, but appear on the inventory to indicate milestones passed in the plot. For example, in The Legend of Zelda, the player can see the total Triforce Shards they have collected.

Tears of the Kingdom

Tears of the Kingdom has an item system very similar to that of Breath of the Wild, but with some additions. Changes to the previously established inventory system are shown below.

  • Armor: Any piece of clothing that Link can equip.
  • Weapons: Any item that Link can use as a melee weapon.
    • Weapons which have been fused gain a solid blue outline on their inventory icon, and the description shows both the base weapon and the attached material. Link can destroy the attached material in his inventory.
    • If a weapon has a special property that increases its attack power, the strength indicator will turn blue if the conditions are fulfilled.
    • Weapons now have a special icon next to their strength indicator, showing whether they are a one-handed weapon, two-handed weapon, or spear.
  • Shields: Any item that Link can use as a shield alongside a one-handed weapon.
    • Shields which have been fused gain a solid blue outline on their inventory icon.
  • Bows: Any item that Link can use to shoot Arrows.
  • Materials: Any item that can be used for healing, cooking, or miscellaneous uses.
    • Materials are now tied to the up slot on the D-Pad, enabling Link to quickly drop materials from his inventory.
    • When choosing to carry materials in his inventory, Link can choose to remove specific materials, rather than in the reverse order he selected them.
  • Zonai Devices: Any Zonai Devices that Link is carrying.
    • Link can deploy up to 10 Zonai Devices at once from his inventory, placing the corresponding devices in the world.
  • Meals: Any Meals, Roasted Food, and Elixirs that Link is carrying.
    • Link can now press X while in this screen to access a recipe book, which lists all meals, roasted food, and elixirs that Link has obtained, as well as the history of recipes used for each one.
  • Key Items: Any key items that Link has received, including collectibles, new abilities or trophies.
