Mido is the rude and jealous boss of Kokiri, he is jealous of Link because Saria and the Great Deku Tree, other high-ranking members of the Kokiri Forest, choose Link over him.
He makes Link buy a Kokiri Sword and a Deku Shield before visiting the Great Deku Tree because he doesn't think "Mr. No-Fairy" can handle what the tree has to offer.
