The Mask is one of many recurring devices in The Legend of Zelda series. Wearing a mask may alter certain actions or change Link in some way, shape, or form. Although, some masks are just for decoration.

Ocarina of Time

There were only a few masks in this game, some of which needed to be traded in order to unlock the rest. This made up one of the simple sidequests found in this game, called the Happy Mask Side Quest. These masks had to be sold to certain people throughout Hyrule. Once all of them were sold they unlocked four new masks, the deku mask, goron mask, zora mask, and the mask of truth. Though the deku, goron, and zora masks did nothing for you (until Majora's Mask) the mask of truth allowed you to speak to sheikah stones found throughout Hyrule.

Majora's Mask

The mask played an enormous role in Majora's Mask, with the addition of masks that allow the user to become a Deku, Goron, or Zora. There is also the Giant's mask that is sometimes considered a transformation mask.

When Link obtains all masks, he is able to make a sort of wager with the Moon Children in order to obtain the final transformation mask: Fierce Deity's Mask which allows the wearer to change into Fierce Deity Link for the duration of a boss battle.

Masks are often obtained through side-quests and are, therefore, rather useless in gameplay.
