Lake of Ill Omen

"Rock Circle
There was a curious rock circle surrounding calm waters in the river that flowed north of the Dark Palace. A sign on the land near this formation read 'Curses to anyone who throws something into my circle of stones.' When a curious adventurer once decided to see what would happen if he were to throw the sign into the rock circle, a troubled fish appeared from below and gave the adventurer a magic medallion, asking to be left in peace.

— Nintendo Player's Guide

The Lake of Ill Omen is a body of water featured in A Link to the Past. It is also the Dark World counterpart of the Waterfall of Wishing. The Lake of Ill Omen is also the source of water for the Dark World.

Location

The Lake of Ill Omen is located in the northeast region of the Dark World. The only way Link can enter the Lake of Ill Omen is by going east of the nearby shop which is the Dark World counterpart of the Magic Shop, then going north from there. Along the way, Link finds a sign that reads "This way >^ Lake Of Ill Omen" indicating that he is close to the lake. It is bordered by Turtle Rock to the north and by Death Mountain to the east. Dark Palace Grounds is to the south of the lake, also. Unlike its Light World counterpart, Link cannot explore beyond the Lake of Ill Omen due to a waterfall blocking the way forward.

Features

The only feature of the Lake of Ill Omen is the ring of stones in the water. In the ring of stones resides a Catfish. Nearby, a sign reads "Curses to anyone who throws something into my circle of stones." Link can ignore the sign and throw an object such as a Bomb, a plant, or a skull into the ring of stones resulting the Catfish to emerge from the depths of the water saying,"Was it you who disturbed my peaceful nap? I will give this to you if you go away!" It then gives Link the Quake Medallion as a peace offering. Afterwards, if Link disturbs the Catfish by throwing another item in the ring of stones, it will throw a fireball or a Bomb out at Link.
