"You got the wooden statue! This oddly shaped statue is said to have once belonged to Ilia. It might be a clue that will help Ilia get her memory back! Set it to [Y] or [X]."

— In-game description

The Wooden Statue was given to Ilia by Impaz while saving her[1]. She left in the Castle Town Medical Clinic by mistake when Prince Ralis was being examined by Dr. Borville. Rather than returning it to her, he intended to sell it for cash[2]. However, he spilt medicine on it and left it outside to air[3]. It was then taken by Louise, the cat from Telma's Bar, with the intention of returning it to Ilia. However, a pack of stalhounds stole it in turn[4].

Later, while Link is attempting to find a way to restore Ilia's memory, he is directed to the Medical Clinic by Telma, armed with Borville's massive invoice for unpaid drinks. Borville, with no sense of irony, complains about it being stolen from him before he could sell it and so doesn't have the rupees to pay it[3]. Wolf Link can then learn the Medicine Scent from the residue, and follow it to Louise, who tells him about the "skeletal dog-beasts" and that he must defeat the entire pack to defeat them[4]. Going to South Hyrule Field, just outside the southern gate to Castle Town, he can defeat them quickly with Midna's help and recover the statue.

Taking it to Ilia does not fully restore her memory, but causes her to remember how Impaz helped her. Gor Coron, his own memory triggered by the sight of the statue, then directs Link to the Hidden Village to continue the quest[5].

Who goes around stealing people's stuff like that? What a world! You always have to be on guard, eh?" — Dr. Borville, Twilight Princess.

Yes, I'll admit it...I took it. But then I was attacked by some sort of skeletal dog beasts who took it from me. I don't know why those beasts were after her statue... I thought it likely that she was in a dangerous spot, though. Those fiends lurk just outside the southern gate... Unfortunately, they only come out at night. ...And another thing... They always move around as a pack. You won't get that statue back unless you give them all a thrashing... That statue sounds like a key to getting Ilia's memory back... You must get it back! That girl won't recover her memory if you don't defeat those dog beasts outside the southern gate and get that statue back. Those fiends travel in a pack at night! Be careful out there! Get that statue back and get it to Ilia as quickly as you can!" — Louise, Twilight Princess.

But I heard that tribe dwindled in the prolonged wars... If you want to find that hidden village, look for a path leading to the Lanayru province on the far side of the Bridge of Eldin." — Gor Coron, Twilight Princess.
