Theory
Dorian is actually an ex-member of the Yiga Clan, who was sent to Kakariko Village as a spy, but fell in love with a local woman there. Behind the Yiga's back, he ended up having two daughters. These daughters made him want to sever ties with the clan. In retaliation to the deviation, the Yiga murdered Dorian's wife in cold blood as a reminder of his loyalties, with threats of his children being killed keeping him in line.
* Although nothing is ever stated outright, there are subtle hints that Dorian once had some interaction with the Great Fairy Cotera who lives above the village, and even that she could be the mother of his children.
** He displays an impressive knowledge and a noticeable protectiveness of her fountain for an outsider who had once served in the Yiga Clan, and claims to be too intimidated to go and meet Cotera himself.
** Both his children bear a certain resemblance to Cotera, particularly Cottla, who also has a similar name.
** Despite Dorian claiming his wife was murdered by the Yiga, none of the other residents of the village mention a recent, apparently senseless killing of one of their own.
*** He claims to fear for his children's safety, yet leaves his house unguarded for long periods of time when his children are there alone, suggesting his "wife" was attacked somewhere outside the village.
** Koko mentions to Link that her mother had a strong affinity for cooking. As the game allows Link to use the aid of fairies to enhance the dishes he makes, it's not inconceivable that a Great Fairy like Cotera would have a similar talent.
** Finally, despite worrying about the threat the Yiga pose to his children, Dorian continues to tell stories of how Cotera can be heard sobbing above the village, which entices Cottla to spend each morning searching for her thinking the sobbing woman is actually her mother.
