The Twilight is an alternate realm that parallels the Realm of Light, which is where the Twili live as well as where Zant and Midna come from. When Zant destroys the three of the four light spirits, their respective lands become part of the Twilight. In the Twilight, Link becomes a beast, Zelda is still Zelda, and Ganondorf is still Ganondork. Everyone else becomes spirits, being unaware that the Twilight has covered their land.
