There are four Light Spirits: Ordona, Faron, Eldin, and Lanayru. They had their light stolen from them by Twilight creatures. Link returns their light by collecting Tears of Light. (Tears of light are collected by defeating Shadow Insects.) In return for being saved, the Light Spirits tell Link where the next Fused Shadow is.
