Allows Link to swim before acquiring the Flippers

Fake Flippers is a glitch used in A Link to the Past. Performing this glitch will allow Link to swim in deep water, before acquiring the Flippers. The glitch is only doable while playing the Japanese 1.0 version of the game.

How-To Perform

  • Link will need to be on a screen where he can jump down into deep water. He will also need to do so, while standing at the very edge of a screen, just before a screen scroll.
  • When jumping into the deep water, hold the direction towards the screen transition. Link will fall in the water and immediately swim towards the next screen. The game will think Link is swimming and will allow Link to continue swimming.

Why it Works

In the Japanese 1.0 version of the game, Link is allowed 8 frames while in the water, before it sends Link out of the water for not having the flippers. This is the exact number of frames needed for Link to swim and transition to the next screen, making this a frame perfect glitch. Although if Link is swimming to the west, the animation is 1 frame quicker, so there is a room for 1 frame of error when performing the glitch.
