The Goddess's Harp is the primary musical instrument found within Skyward Sword. Zelda can be seen playing the harp early on in the quest, but Link acquires the harp himself after a scene at the Temple of Time. It is also used by Sheik in Ocarina of Time.

The Harp is the primary musical instrument found within Skyward Sword. Zelda can be seen playing the harp early on in the quest, but Link acquires the harp himself after a scene at the Temple of Time. It's probably the same harp that's used by Sheik in OoT.
Skyward Sword
The harp is an essential part to the plot of Skyward Sword. Zelda uses it at the beginning of the game during the Wing Ceremony and is later found in the Temple of Time after completing the Lanayru Mining Facility strumming the Ballad of the Goddess. When Ghirahim attacks, she bestows the harp upon Link and then quickly leaves with Impa through the Gate of Time.

You can play five songs with the harp. The five songs is: Ballad of the Goddess, Farore's Courage, Nayru's Wisdom, Din's Power and Song of the Hero. All of these songs (except Ballad of the Goddess) open up ways to the Silent Realm. To get Song of the Hero you have to go to the three dragons: Faron, Eldin and Lanayru. Something that's new for Skyward Sword is that you only can play the songs in some places, not everywhere like with the Ocarina.
Link can take out the harp almost anywhere in the world and begin to strum. If he plays it in time with the music of the area, the harp will create an accompaniment to it.

When you see a group of Blessed Butterflies it often means that you should play the Goddess's Harp. You do not need to play a ceartain melody, it's just freestyling. There are three things that could happen if you do so. First: Nothing happens. Second: A Sheikah Stone pops up and gives you a treasure and a hint. Third: A wall nearby becomes a Goddess Wall.
In most cases, Link can reveal Goddess Walls and Sheikah Stones if there are three Blessed Butterflies surrounding an area. Playing any sort of chord on the harp will make one or the other appear.

There are also five full songs available on the harp. However, Link can only play them during certain events, unlike in previous games such as Ocarina of Time where they could be played anywhere. All of the songs, excluding Ballad of the Goddess, are used to open a gate to the Silent Realm.

Songs
*Ballad of the Goddess: Opens a path to the Thunderhead and reveals the Gate of Time
*Farore's Courage: Opens a portal to the Silent Realm in Faron Woods
*Nayru's Wisdom: Opens a portal to the Silent Realm in Lanayru Desert
*Din's Power: Opens a portal to the Silent Realm in Eldin Volcano
*Song of the Hero: Opens a portal to the Silent Realm in Skyloft

The Song of the Hero is obtained in four parts from Levias, Faron, Eldin, and Lanayru.

Ocarina of Time
The harp is used by Sheik when playing duets with Link on his ocarina. This indicates that the harp was passed down through the Royal Family to a future Princess Zelda.
