Nintendo Power: September/October 1989 is the eighth issue of Nintendo Power magazine. Up through the end of 1990, Nintendo Power magazine volumes were released covering two-month periods of time, and they were not generally numbered in or on the magazine until Volume 16 (September/October 1990), although "Strategy Guide" issues before this carried a dual "SGxx/NPxx" numbering.

Zelda Content

Players Pulse (pp. 6-7)

In the Player's Pulse, Kerry Bachman writes in, talking about his accomplishment of finally reaching Level Nine in The Legend of Zelda. Kerry writes that he called in to the Nintnedo Hotline for advice on completing Level Nine, but the counselors did not give him the solution. The counselors told him that this was secret information. In their answer, Nintendo writes that they are proud of Kerry for reaching Level Nine, but completing a game is an important achievement that players should be proud of. They don't want to destroy that surprise, so they only disclose limited information about level nine.

Mark Discordia writes in, writing that has completed numerous difficult games, including The Legend of Zelda.

Counselor's Corner (p. 35)

In the Counselor's Corner, one question is answered for The Adventure of Link. Additionally, one of the counselors, Kim Racey is featured, and her favorite NES game is listed as Legend of Zelda.

Getting the Hammer?

  • Where is the Hammer?

Link will find the Hammer in the dark caves of Death Mountain. Link must first cross the bridge at the Water Town of Saria. In order to do so, he'll first need to find Bagu, the hermit that lives in the woods northeast of Saria.

Nintendo Power offers a solution for getting through Death Mountain. When faced with an option, always choose the path that leads to the east. The only exception is if there is no path to the east, then take the only other available path. Once he gets through the maze, Link will find a hole in a wide open space that he can drop down into. This is the way to the Hammer, but the enemies in Death Mountain are mean and malicious. Link should first get the Life Spell by returning the Mirror to one of the villagers in the Water Town of Saria. It is also recommened to build up your Attack, Magic, and Life up to the fourth level before taking on Death Mountain.

Classified Information (p. 74)

In the Classified Information section, a tip is given for The Adventure of Link.

Monster Maneuver

Throughout the overworld, there are numerous squares that will automatically trigger a battle sequence. This is particularly common along the way to the Great Palace. After passing the River Devil, when Link walks down a square, right two squares, and then down a square, there is battle sequence that will trigger and it seems unavoidable. However, if Link walks onto the square at the same time that a wandering monster appears, the monster battle takes priority. Since Link is on a main road, this is a perfectly safe spot and Link can then bypass this square and continue along the path.

When closer to the Great Palace, he can repeat this same trick to bypass some of the more difficult squares in route to the Great Palace. However, while in the Valley of Death, the squares are not nearly as safe and Link will trigger a battel sequence with enemies, albeit ones that are far less dangerous.

NES Journal (pp. 93)

In the NES Journal, the Celebrety Profiles section highlights actor Brian Robbins, who at the time was known for playing the character Eric Mardian in the ABC sitcom Head of the Class. Robbins also served as the host of the children's version of the TV show Pictionary. He comments that he loves playing Baseball and The Legend of Zelda on the NES. He later mentions that while he's a great player on Baseball, he could use some tips from the Nintendo's Game Counselors when it comes to The Legend of Zelda.
