Video game archivist Mr. Talida of Keshi Corner has been hard at work preserving vintage video game merchandise, particularly “keshi gomu” rubber figures which were released in Japan throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Using 3D printing technology, Mr. Talida creates 3D scans of the figures, which are then uploaded free to the public so that anyone with a 3D printer and the right materials can have recreations of these retro figures for themselves. Previous scans have included Bandai’s keshi figures…

I never would have thought to pair a marimba and violin together to cover the title theme of Ocarina of Time, but I am so glad the YouTube channel Classical Covers did. The music from the opening sequence from the 1998 game is nostalgic and iconic. Adapting the theme from the flute that calls the wind in The Legend of Zelda, it invokes a sense of dreamy childhood, and perhaps waking up at sunrise to go on a new adventure….

Skyloft is one of the most calming environments in the Zelda series — save the Remlits after dark. Skyward Sword pairs the island with an equally soothing theme, and the sounds do an excellent job of translating the scenery’s pastels into a song, which is why it works so wonderfully on piano. Meet Michael Tai, a talented pianist who made a lovely piano cover of Skyloft’s theme. It delivers the buoyant joy of the original track, evoking the nostalgia we all…

The rise of online marketplaces and e-commerce companies like Etsy have given fans more options in how they showcase their love of different film, television, or video game franchises. The Zelda series is one of the most popular video game series on online marketplaces like Etsy, and I am always amazed at the creative products that fans can pick up from talent creators. For Zelda fans looking to decorate their first apartments or houses, these online market places are filled…

Ocarina of Time’s “Serenade of Water” is a reflection on time’s changing and unending flow. Before playing the serenade for Link, Sheik says as much: “Time passes, people move…like a river’s flow, it never ends…the clear water’s surface reflects growth…” The following improvisation on and expansion of the piece illustrates just that. Kara Comparetto recently shared “Improv on Serenade of Water ~ Zelda: Ocarina of Time ~ Piano” on the Kara Comparetto Klips YouTube channel. Comparetto begins the piece with…

In our modern world, the music of a video game is significant, to say the least. It can bring you into a game or take you out of it. Often, it plays a fundamental role in the design and structure of a game, including the mechanics. Perhaps no other fanbase can affirm this importance more than those loyal to the Legend of Zelda series. For many, the quintessential example lies with Ocarina of Time. A new analysis video by Liam…

Animated videos depicting moments from video game history have allowed fans to recreate their memories using unique art styles and interpretive emotions to convey the experiences had. Sometimes, rather than a “factual” depiction of what happened in the game, the creator focuses on the potential internal experience had by the player, showing their feelings towards certain events and NPCs, or ways they may have wished to play the game. Enter Fela animations, and their recreation of some of the opening…

Anyone who has played through Tears of the Kingdom can tell you that the beginning can be tough. Link has been knocked back to a weaker version of himself and depends on tree branches for offense and wooden shields for defense. When I first started, I heard the “Game Over”  music so much that my preschooler would hear it and say, “S’okay, Mommy, try again,” without even looking up from what he was doing. CarbotAnimations captures that feeling perfectly in…

Were you part of the Korok Space Program, where Koroks became unwilling test subjects? Did you do something awful to one of the Forest Spirits? If so, be very, very careful, because revenge may be afoot! This YouTube video by ChengXiaoMai demonstrates the perils that can befall you following crimes committed against the Koroks. Here, ChengXiaoMai happened to see some Tears of the Kingdom graffiti and stopped to take an innocent selfie, when the Koroks used their power! They unleash…

“Ballad of the Goddess” is one of the most notable new songs to appear in the Zelda series over the past fifteen years. In addition to playing a key role in the story of Skyward Sword, the song also doubled as the main theme of the 2010 game. Since its debut, “Ballad of the Goddess” has appeared in the Super Smash Bros. series on Zelda stages, and it has cameoed as one of the Milk Bar song in A Link Between…
