In Phantom Hourglass, it is part of the Trading Sequence, and is obtained by giving the Guard Notebook to Nyave in the Southwestern sea. If you give it to the Wayfarer on his ship in the Southeastern sea, you can then go back to Bannan Island, where you will obtain the Swordsman's Scroll. This allows you to perform the Great Spin Attack by doing three Spin Attacks.

In Spirit Tracks, the wood heart is a common item found in in many different ways and areas. It is used to buy train parts from Linebeck III, but it can also be sold for 50 Rupees.
