The triforce is a recurring item in teh Zelda series, It's typically the items Ganon is trying to get his hands on. Each shard stand for a trait, Courage (Link), Wisdom (Zelda) and Power (Ganon). It's origins are said to be by the Three Golden Godessess, Apparently it got left behind by them, not created.
