After the three Goddesses, Din, Nayru, and Farore, created Hyrule, they descended to the sky, and created a parallel universe, known as the Sacred Realm, or the Golden Land. At the center of the Sacred Realm, they made the Temple of Light. This is where the Goddesses left the earth, and at the point of their departure, remained three golden triangles, the Triforce. The Sacred Realm will reflect all who enter's hearts. If their heart is pure and true, the Golden Land would be paradise. If their heart is evil, the Triforce would break apart into three pieces, and the Sacred Realm would become polluted with the desires of that evil heart. However, if another heart were to enter the realm, and were to challenge and defeat the evil one, the Sacred Realm would be cleansed, and be the land it was once before.

"In a realm beyond sight, the sky shines gold, not blue. There, the Triforce's might makes mortal dreams come true." -The Book of Mudora description.
The Sacred Realm is depicted as a Golden Land in this game. Rather than the sky being blue, the skies were gold, and shined down on all that was below. One day, a theif named Gannondorf accidentally found his way into the Sacred Realm. He and his men came across the Triforce, and in his lust for power, Gannondorf killed his men so that he could have complete control, and do as he wished. In that moment that Gannondorf laid his hand upon the golden relic, the Sacred Realm was twisted into a land of evil, and it slowly died. Gannondorf himself, was then turned into a beast, representing his heart. That beast was named Gannon. He waged a war against Hyurle that was fought against Hylian Knights and the Seven Wise Men. The wise men agreed to seal the entrance to the Golden Land, Gannon along with it. This legend became known as the Imprisoning War.
Gannon remained in the now polluted Sacred Realm for generations, breaking it down into a land of the complete opposite of Hyrule. The fields withered, the sky turned dreary, and hope quickly dwindled. He turned the Golden Land into the Dark World. Gannon's wicked, twisted wish was to break the lock between Hyrule and the Dark World.

A hero, Link, is sent into the Dark World by one of Gannon's minions, the dark wizard, Agahnim. It is from there Link learns of what Gannon did to the Sacred Realm, the home of the ancient relic, the Triforce, and he resolves to return the Golden Land to it's former beauty. After Link purges this land of immorality, and saves the Seven Maidens, the descendants of the Seven Wise Men, he faces off with the King of Evil, Gannon, at the Pyramid of Power. Ensuing Gannon's defeat,  Link comes in the presence of what is known as, the Essence of the Triforce. Link revives the Triforce by his heart, and wish of purity. Finally, the Sacred Realm is once again the Golden Land.

"For it is in that Sacred Realm that one will find the divine relic, the Triforce, which contains the essence of the gods..." - Great Deku Tree (Ocarina of Time)

The Sacred Realm is next seen in Ocarina of Time, and it is said to have taken place several centuries before A Link to the Past. At the time, the only entrance to the Sacred Realm was the Door of Time, a gateway in the Temple of Time, that only authorized the one with the three Spiritual Stones, and the Ocarina of Time to enter.
The story starts out with a tale told to Link by the Great Deku Tree. He tells Link of the goddesses, the Triforce, and a man who cursed him in order to steal the Kokiri's Emerald, the first Spiritual Stone Link gains possession of. He describes the Sacred Realm as a place of serene beauty, and power. When he is finished, he requests Link travel to Hyrule Castle to meet with the Princess of Destiny, Zelda. There, Zelda tells Link of a man named Gannondorf, and that she had a vision of his immorality, and a boy with a fairy coming to the rescue. Link and Zelda then decide that it is their duty to collect all three Spiritual Stones, and get to the Sacred Realm before Gannondorf.
"When evil rules all, an awakening voice from the Sacred Realm will call those destined to be Sages." -Sheik
When Link finally acquires the three Spiritual Stones, and the Ocarina of Time, he journeys to the Temple of Time and opens the seal, the link between the two worlds, the Door of Time. He pulls the Master Sword from the Pedestal of Time, and  Link is put to sleep for seven years because he was too young to be the Hero of Time. While Link is asleep, Gannondorf gains access to the Sacred Realm, taking power of the Triforce, and sending Hyrule into mortal terror. After Link awakens seven years older, he is greeted by the Light Sage Rauru, and is informed of all Gannondorf's wicked deeds. Link is then tasked with the job to awaken the missing Sages, in order to seal Gannondorf away in the Sacred Realm, and return Hyrule to it's once peaceful state.
By using the power of the Master Sword, Link stuns the Dark Beast, Gannon just long enough for the Seven Sages to bind, and trap him in the Evil Realm. This is the seal Gannon attempts to break in A Link to the Past.
The game ends by the Triforce being separated into it's three parts. Power going to Gannon, Wisdom going to Zelda, and Courage going to Link. Ensuing this, the Sacred Realm is turned into the Evil Realm... And Gannon's eternal prison.

"Those who do not know the dangers of wielding power... Will soon be ruled by it." -Lanayru

This is the legend the Light Spirit Lanayru tells Link after cleansing the Lanayru Province of Twilight. Lanayru shows Link glimpses of the Sacred Realm, and tells him how people were once equally powerful, and content in mind and body alone, but word of the Sacred Realm rapidly spread, along with that of the Triforce, and it's ability to grant wishes.
A tribe who lustfully longed for power, the power of the Triforce, created a dark evil, called the Fused Shadows. They used their magic to kill unwittingly, as they strived to reach their goal. A war enraged, and blood was spread across all of Hyrule. It was then the goddesses wish to create a counter-balance to the darkness. Something to cease the battles, and calm the earth. Thus creating light spirits: Ordona, Lanayru, Eldin, and Faron. These spirits protected the Light world. They chased the dark ones across the lands of Hyrule, eventually sending them to another dimension... Twilight.
As time passed, the Dark Interlopers grew to become a peaceful race called the Twili.
