Here is a listing of all the characters found within Link's Awakening. If we are missing any of them, (even very minor ones), feel free to add them. Also, I'd like to have these descriptions expanded as much as possible. Every little detail in terms of the role they play in the game, when they do certain things, or when they say certain things, what they give you, where they are located, what they look like, or anything else. Many of these characters already have sprite images which are listed at our current Link's Awakening Guide. Additionally, some of them have official artwork that will be added to the characters page once it gets put together in a new format.

Chef Bear

Chef Bear is the cook in Animal Village. He is looking for a Honeycomb for his food, which Link just so happens to have on his trading quest. He gives Link a Pineapple in exchange for the Honeycomb he got from Tarin in Ukuku Prairie.

Christine

Christine is a goat that lives in Animal Village. She is Mr. Write's pen pal. Christine gives Link a Letter as part of the Trading Sequence to give to Mr. Write. It contains a picture of Princess Peach. Mr. Write has no idea she is a goat, he thinks he's writing to a beautiful woman.

Crazy Tracy

Crazy Tracy lives in a small house by Manbo's pond. She will give Link some of her Secret Medicine for a mere 27 rupees. Alternately, the Secret Medicine can be found in Face Shrine, Eagle's Tower, and Turtle Rock in treasure chests, but it's usually tricky to get to them.

Cucco Keeper

The Cucco Keeper lives in the Hen House on the top of Tal Tal Heights. He has several cuccos in his home, and he tells Link the legend of the blue flying rooster. After Link beats Eagle's Tower, the rooster will no longer be with you, but it found it's way into the Hen House. As you can see from the image, it looks like he won't give it up anytime soon. :-P

Fairy Queen

Fairy Queen can only be found in Link's Awakening DX. She resides within the Color Dungeon. After Link completing the dungeon successfully, she offers him either the Blue Clothes or the Red Clothes as a reward for.

Fisherman

There are two Fisherman on Koholint Island. One of them is in Mabe Village, and will give you a Piece of Heart if you catch a big fish. The second one is under a bridge in Martha's Bay. If you give him the Fishing Hook you got from Grandma Ulrira, he will promise you his next catch. It turns out he catches a Necklace that belongs to the Mermaid, Martha.

Ghost

This Ghost will begin to stalk Link after completing Angler's Tunnel. It pushes you to take it to its old house, which turns out to be the House by the Bay. However, due to nostalgia issues, it requests that you take it to its grave by the Witch's Hut. Doing so, it will go to rest, but before it does, it will tell you that there's a treasure under a pot in its old home, and it is a Secret Seashell. Note: The Seashell will not be there if you check under the pots before you lay it to rest.

Goriya

Goriya is a Boomerang Dealer that lives in a cave on Toronbo Shores. He can only be seen after you found the Magnifying Lens,

Grandma Ulrira

Grandma Ulrira can usually be found outside of Ulrira's house in Mabe Village sweeping. If you give her the broom you got from Mr. Write, she will become ecstatic and give you a Fishing Hook in return. Note: Later in the game after obtaining five or more instruments, she will be found in Animal Village instead.

Great Fairy

Four Great Fairies can be found in total on Koholint Island. When visited, they'll restore Link's health. Great Fairies can be found in the Mysterious Forest, Ukuku Prairie, Face Shrine, and Eastern Tal Tal Mountains.

Kiki

A Link To The Past's monkey returns! Kiki can be found east of Kanalet Castle's gate. Since the gate is locked, Link will need to use his services, for a price. Give him the Banana you got from Sale and he will call in his friends to make a bridge for you so you can get into Kanalet Castle. A Stick is left behind for you, the next item in the Trading Sequence.

Link

The star of the game, and of all the other zelda games to date. Link was side tracked in a thunder storm when a bolt of lightning struck his raft. He got washed up on Koholint Island, and everyone says he cannot leave until the Wind Fish awakens. Marin and Tarin, residents of Mabe Village took him in when Marin found him washed up on the shores. Isn't it strange how awakening a fish is his only way out? Don't you wonder why he can't just sail away? That's for you to find out.

Mad Batter

Not named in the game, but in the strategy guide. Mad Batter is found in three different places on Koholint Island. If Link sprinkles Magic Powder on his wells, he will come out and let him hold more Magic Powder, Bombs, and Arrows. Mad Batter can be found in the Mysterious Forest, near the House by the Bay, and on the west Tal Tal Mountain Range.

Madame MeowMeow

Madame MeowMeow lives in Mabe Village with her two chain chomps. The small one lives in the doghouse, and she gives Link some Dog food in exchange for the Bow he got from Papahl's wife. The big one, BowWow, gets kidnapped by Moblins after the first dungeon, and it's Link's job to save him.

Mamu

Mamu owns a band, they live under the Signpost Maze. Link needs to read all of the signs in the correct order, and a staircase will appear. They will let you hear their un-released song for quite the bargain. Doing so will teach Link his third Ocarina song, the Frog's Song of Soul. This will bring certain things and/or beings back to life.

Manbo

Manbo is a big fish that lives in a cave west of Angler's Tunnel. Talk to him and his fish, and they will sing a song. Link learns his second song from it, Manbo's Mambo. Playing this song will warp you to Manbo's Pond, or play it in dungeons will warp you to the entrance of it.

Marin

Marin found Link washed up on the beach one day. She seems to have a love thing for Link, but she never completely shows it. You will see her several times during the game, one time sitting with her on the beach, another time saving her in Tal Tal Heights. Marin teaches Link the Ballad of the Wind Fish on his Ocarina. It is known to have awakening powers, as the Owl says.

Martha

Martha's Bay is named after this Mermaid. Martha resides west of Catfish's Maw in the bay. If you give her the Necklace the Fisherman found to her, she will let you take a Scale off her tail. Using this scale you can move the mermaid statue in the bay. After getting the Scale, you never see her again after that.

Mr. Write

Mr. Write lives in a house on the northern border of the Mysterious Forest. He is Christine's pen pal. He gives you a Broom as part of the Trading Sequence if you deliver Christine's letter for him. Mr. Write has no idea that Christine is a goat; the picture he got in the letter was one of Princess Peach, not Christine.

Owl

The Owl gives Link his words of wisdom several times on Link's journey. He usually tells Link where to go next, and gives him hints about the island. The Owl is actually the guardian of the Wind Fish's dream world, but you don't find that out until the end of the game.

Papahl

Papahl lives in Mabe Village with his wife and quadruplets. He tells you that he will get lost in the mountains later in the game. Turns out he does, and you give him the Pineapple Chef Bear gave you, which will give him energy to get up. He will give you a Hibiscus in return for your troubles.

Photographer

Found only in the DX version, the Photographer is a mouse that takes pictures of Link. He will take a total of thirteen different screen shots, but only twelve of them can be obtained in one game file. When you make the album, he will ask you to stand at the stage. If you say yes, Link will stand on the stage with a peace sign. If you refuse several times, he will beat you up and take a picture of you knocked out on the stage.

Rabbits

There are several Rabbits in Animal Village. Oddly, they are drawn into hypnosis practically whenever Marin sings her Ballad of the Wind Fish song.

Richard

Richard has appeared in a few nintendo games in the past. He lived in Kanalet Castle until his servants went berserk. He fled to his Vila, southwest of Kanalet Castle. He requests that you retrieve his five Golden Leaves, in return gains you access to Key Cavern via the Slime Key.

Sale

Sale is an alligator that lives in a house on Toronbo Shores. He sells bananas, and is a huge fan of canned food. Give him the Dog Food you got from the little chain chomp in Mabe Village and he'll give you some bananas in exchange. He is related to Schule Donavitch.

Schule Donavitch

Schule Donavitch lives in Animal Village. He is an artist and can always be found trying to paint a picture of a Hippo in his house. He has a french accent and is related to Sale.

Shop Keeper

The Shop Keeper owns the shop in Mabe Village. He sells goods to Link to help him on his quest. However, Link can steal the items, resulting in the Shop Keeper blasting him with a bolt of lightning that will kill him the next time he enters. Link will be called "THIEF" for the rest of the game if he steals anything.

Syrup

Syrup is a witch who lives in a hut on the eastern border of the Mysterious Forest. If Link gives her the Toadstool he finds in the forest, she will make some Magic Powder for him.

Tarin

Tarin is Marin's father. He gives Link his Shield back after he wakes up in their house. Later, he is chased by a swarm of bees after knocking down a beehive. Tarin is very protective of Marin and watches out for her.

Ulrira

Ulrira is a shy old man who never talks in person. If you go into a Tree Telephone Booth, he will talk through the phone and give you a hint of what to do next.

Village Kids

There are a few Village Kids in Mabe Village. They usually give hints about the island, or about the game, saving, etc. When BowWow gets kidnapped, the two kids by the Library that usually play ball will tell you about the recent crises.

Wind Fish

Wind Fish is large, flying whale that sleeps inside an egg on the top of Mt. Tamaranch on Koholint Island. Later in this game, Link discovers that Koholint Island is a dream of the Wind Fish.
