Epona's debut came in ''[[The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time|Ocarina of Time]]''. She can be found in the [[Lon Lon Ranch]] with [[Malon]] as a child. She is a shy horse and will keep her distance from everybody other than Malon. When Link talks to Malon, she will teach Link [[Epona's Song]]. During this time, Epona will grow fond of Link. When Link returns as an adult, and after paying [[Ingo]] to take a ride on a horse, Epona's Song can be played to summon and ride Epona around the enclosed area. If Link speaks to Ingo while mounted on Epona, he will challenge Link to a race. Beating him twice will allow Link to keep Epona, and although Ingo tries to keep Link from leaving the ranch, he can simply jump a fence to get out.

 

Epona is a very useful copmanion, allowing Link to quickly and safely get from one place to another in the vast land of [[Hyrule]]. Link is completely invincible while on Epona. As an adult, using Epona is the only method of reaching the [[Gerudo's Fortress]], before acquiring the [[Longshot]]. Epona also helps tremendously in completing the timed missions within the [[Ocarina of Time Biggoron's Sword Trading Sequence|Trading Sequence]].

 

When Link has returned peace to Hyrule, he returns his beloved Epona to the Lon Lon Ranch and returns to a child.

 

Despite the perceived importance of Epona, she is a completely optional character and she is not required to complete the game.

However, if Link is in Minish form, he can stand just south of Epona and he is close to enough to talk to. Epona will tell link to buy some Lon Lon Milk from her so that the wagon is not as heavy on the way back to the ranch.{{Ref|TMC|2348|Epona}} Link is able to fuse [[Kinstone|Green Kinstones]] with Epona.{{Ref|TMC|1152|Epona}} As it is a Green Kinstone fusion, it is not set to a specific treasure chest, but instead, one of the many possible treasure chests. There is one random [[Kinstone|Red Kinstone]] within the game that opens up a location in the [[Hyrule Castle Garden]] leading to a [[Piece of Heart]], as well as a random [[Kinstone|Blue Kinstone]] that opens up a tree in [[North Hyrule Field]] leading to a Fairy Fountain. Epona is one of the many characters in which Link can make these Kinstone fusions with.

Epona's combat system was completely revamped for ''Twilight Princess''. Not only is Link able to use his [[Bow]] while on Epona like in previous games, but also other weapons, including his [[Sword]]. However, he is not invincible in this game. Notable horseback battles include the two against [[King Bulblin]] and a final one against [[Ganon]].{{Clear|left}}

*Epona is one of the few horses, if not the only one in the Zelda games, which is confirmed to be a mare. Other horses are either not verifiable, or are assumed to be male.
