Oddly enough, the game mechanics for Skyloft only allows the player to sucessfully jump off skyloft at designated ramps. If a jump is attempted elsewhere, or incorrectly executed in general, the player will be unable to call his loftwing and he then ends up being rescued by a Rescue Knight. The reason for these mechanics is most problably to avoid situations where Link would bellyflop off every cliff he tries to jump from.
