Phantom Ganon serves as the game's secondary antagonist and can appear in various locations around Hyrule and the Depths. He first appears as a Gloom Spawn - a mass of five hands with eyes surrounded by gloom. After defeating the five hands, Phantom Ganon may appear.
Phantom Ganon serves as the game's secondary antagonist and can appear in various locations around Hyrule and the Depths. It first appears as a Gloom Spawn - a mass of five hands with eyes surrounded by gloom. After defeating the five hands, Phantom Ganon may appear.

Phantom Ganon has a variety of attacks. He has a bow with which he can shoot from afar, and he can teleport to Link's location. He can also attack and charge with his sword. He is surrounded by Gloom, which will damage Link if he stands on it for too long.
Phantom Ganon posed as Princess Zelda to cover for her disappearance during the Upheaval, doing things that were uncharacteristic of the real princess, such as banning any study of particular ruins at Kakariko Village, siccing the Sludge Like on King Dorephan and giving Yunobo a mask that enspells him and causes him to market Marbled Rock Roast. Once Yunobo is freed of the mask, the same disguised Phantom Ganon lured him and Link to the Fire Temple, pretending to be the Marbled Gohma's captive. After Link awakened the four sages, Phantom Ganon, still posing as Zelda, lured Link to [[Hyrule Castle (Breath
of the Wild)|Hyrule Castle]] and ambushed him with monster forces multiple times before trapping him in the Sanctum. There, Ganondorf appeared and taunted Link, ordering Phantom Ganon to attack him before disappearing. In this fight, Phantom Ganon created multiple copies of itself to combat Link. When Link destroyed these, Phantom Ganon created another set of copies and attempted to fill the room with Gloom.

Defeating Phantom Ganon will provide rare weapons and materials such as Dark Clumps, the Gloom Sword, Gloom Spear, Gloom Club, and the Demon King's Bow. The melee weapons provide the highest base damage in the game as unfused weapons, allowing for the potential for powerful fusion combinations, at the cost of dealing Link progressive gloom damage during use.
When Link defeated the second set of copies, Phantom Ganon vanished. Ganondorf reappeared and attacked Link with four tendrils of Gloom similar to the one he attacked him with beneath Hyrule Castle. This time, however, the sages arrived and saved Link. Ganondorf then fled once again, as he had not yet regained his full power. It's also shown that this particular Phantom Ganon existed as far back as before Ganondorf became the Demon King, as he used its fake Zelda form in his assassination of Queen Sonia. Though the fake Zelda's deceit was uncovered and her attack on Sonia stopped, it was nonetheless distraction enough for Ganondorf himself to kill Sonia and steal her Secret Stone.

A fixed Phantom Ganon encounter is set in the Sanctum of Hyrule Castle and can only be fought as part of the Crisis at Hyrule Castle main quest. This is composed of 3 Phantom Ganons in the first wave and 5 in the second. If this fixed encounter is not defeated, then Link will have to fight 2 waves of 5 Phantom Ganons each before being able to confront Ganondorf in the Depths of Hyrule.
If not defeated in Hyrule Castle, Phantom Ganon will appear after the temple bosses in Gloom’s Lair.
