The cave was blocked by Ganondorf after the leader of the Gorons, Darunia, refused to give the King of Evil the Spiritual Stone of Fire. These events caused the Goron poulation to starve, due to the fact that the gourmet rocks present in the cavern were the primary source of a Goron's food. Darunia gives Link the Goron's Bracelet, after was calmed down by Link. The Bracelet gives Link the ability to destroy the rock blocking the entrance with Bomb Flowers. After defeating the boss Dodongo he is rewarded with the Goron's Ruby by Darunia. They also become sworn brothers.

The dungeon's item is the Bomb Bag, allowing Link to carry Bombs. The Mini-Boss consists of multiple Lizalfos, and the Boss is King Dodongo. Upon defeating King Dodongo and saving the Goron's from starvation, Link is awarded the Goron's Ruby from Darunia as well as a Heart Container that arises from the bosses remains.
Dungeon Design
The dungeon is mainly composed of rocky walls and lava pools. There are also a lot of Bomb Flowers. This dungeon is not as hot as Death Mountain Crater and Link is not burned over time.

The main room is a big hall with a status of Dodongo's head as the entrance to the last dungeon part and 2 bridges in the second floor. There are two levels and big stairs in the lower floor leading to the upper one. Link can enable an elevator in the second level, serving as a short-cut in the main room.
