Fi first appears to Link inside the Knight Academy shortly after he is separated from Zelda by a black tornado. She leads Link throughout the town of Skyloft to the secret interior of the Goddess Statue where the Goddess Sword rests. Fi entices Link to draw the blade and, with the help of Gaepora, exposits the great destiny that he must fulfill by descending to the Surface and reuniting with Zelda, giving him the Emerald Tablet that will open the way to Faron Woods.
Link's sidekick in this game is a female-presenting spirit and servant of the Goddess known as Fi. She bears the same diamond as Zelda and Ghirahim. Fi was created by the Goddess with the strict purpose of aiding her chosen hero on his destined mission with her vast knowledge. She is the spirit of the Goddess Sword itself, and its power helps Link throughout his journey. Fi can analyze readings given off by objects and people to allow Link to use Dowsing to locate them, and gives him information on his surroundings.

Fi goes on to accompany Link in his travels throughout the game, designating him to be her master as the wielder of the Goddess Sword and pledging her eternal guidance and loyalty to him. Because she was programmed with a wealth of knowledge and information, she is able to provide Link with detailed analyses of enemies, items, and areas he comes across in his journey. She also teaches him important techniques such as the Skyward Strike and how to dowse for certain characters and items, and translates divine messages to be relayed to Link. As the game advances, Link is required to empower his blade by imbuing it with three Sacred Flames, which together transform Fi's dwelling into the legendary Master Sword.
Fi acts emotionlessly, speaking in clinical terms and talking of percentages and logical conclusions, almost as though she is a robot. Despite that, she can sing and dance gracefully, and does so as she aids Link by conveying messages left by her creator, the Goddess Hylia, and joining Link in playing songs. She gives Link information about objects, enemies, bosses, and characters, and will also analyze the suitability of Link's inventory for the current area, give rumors, remind him of objectives, and give him plot summaries and statistics. Fi is an invaluable companion and source of information, and she is by Link's side for his entire journey.

Fi retains a very icy and stoic demeanor throughout the game, owing to her innate inability to feel emotion, and frequently presents information to Link in the form of percentages, calculations, and variables. This also leads her to be very forward and blunt in her analyses of other characters, and she is not above treating even Link with some snide early on in his adventure. The two of them gradually grow closer as the story advances, however, and Fi confesses near the end of the game that she has come to cherish the time they've spent together. Also among her attributes are a propensity for singing, as her vocals accompany Link on the Goddess Harp when activating Trial Gates, and dancing, as she does when translating messages at the Skyview and Earth Springs and the Isle of Songs.

Following the successful defeat of Demise, Fi is able to absorb the demon king's remains into the Master Sword, ensuring they remain sealed there with no hope of escape. With the journey at its end and Zelda and Link reunited, Fi requests that Link bring their mission to an end by planting the Master Sword in its pedestal in the Temple of Hylia, at which point Fi will retreat into an endless sleep within the blade, despite Link's objections. In her final moments, Fi reassures Link by claiming to feel happiness as she reflects on the time they've spent together, and bids him a grateful farewell in the hope that they may meet in another life
