The Fairy Islands are a series of islands in the Great Sea in The Wind Waker. Each of the islands is shaped like a heart, but the hearts are all facing different directions. On every Fairy Island is a conch shell-like structure in the middle, and the islands themselves seem small and empty. If Link enters the structure in the middle, however, he enters what seems like a whole new world. The walls seem like falling raindrops, and there is a monument with a little bit of water in a quiet, serene room decorated with seashells. When Link walks towards the fountain, he notices a small, blonde fairy alone in the middle. That fairy looks at Link, spins around a few times, then explodes in a blast of magic energy and transforms into a Great Fairy. Each Great Fairy on all of the Fairy Islands looks the same, and each gives Link some upgrade to him that will help him on his adventure. The Fairy Islands also have their own different puzzle of entering to the fairy fountain; Link usually is not able to just walk in.

Southern Fairy Island is located two squares west of Forest Haven. The shell on this island is blocked by a wooden barrier and can be destroyed by using either Fire Arrows or a Bomb. Inside, the Great Fairy of this island will upgrade Link's Bomb Bag. This island is also the only one of the Fairy Islands that Link can warp to using the Ballad of Gales song with his Wind Waker. Also, there is a Piece of Heart underwater around this island, but can only be obtained after Link buys the Treasure Chart from Beedle and gets the Grappling Hook from Dragon Roost Island.
