Originally released as a flagship game for the Famicom Disc System, "Hyrule
Destiny" was later renamed to "The Legend of Zelda" and released again for the
Nintendo Entertainment System for international release. It became such a huge
success that since then, it has been released multiple times for various console
and handheld systems.
The producer of both of the Mario and Zelda series wanted this franchise to
capture the feeling of adventure he had exploring the woods in his home land of
Japan, that child-like exploration and discovery, with no boundaries and full of
imagination. The Zelda series reflects Mr. Miyamoto's ideas in a very
interesting way that no other games had captured before. The Legend of Zelda was
unique in that it combined several gaming genres that had previously been set
apart, including action, adventure, role-playing and puzzle-solving, into a
smooth adventure.
The object of the game is to find, traverse and complete the nine dungeons of
the game. With the exception of the last dungeon, any of the others can be done
in a variety of orders, allowing players to take various paths to complete the
game. The same goes for the items, many of which were completely optional. This
non-linear and flexible game play make the Zelda series unique.
