The '''Nintendo Entertainment System''' ('''NES''') is the first home gaming console made by [[Nintendo]] to be released internationally. It was Nintendo's first American home console (Nintendo arcade games had been released in America before 1985.) In Japan, the system is named the FAMICOM or Family Computer Disk System.

 

The '''Famicom''', short for "Family Computer", was the Japanese version of the NES. It was released in 1983. Many more addons for the Famicom than the NES were released, including a [[wikipedia:Famicom Data Recorder|tape drive]] for saving data, a keyboard for use with a [[wikipedia:Family BASIC|BASIC interpreter]], and a [[Famicom Disk System|floppy disk drive]]. The Famicom's controller contained a microphone that could be used in gameplay; the [[Pols Voice]] in ''The Legend of Zelda'' was affected by the player blowing into the microphone.
