leftKing Dodongo is the big boss of the second dungeon, Dodongo's Cavern, in Ocarina of Time and everything you'd expect a giant dinosaur in a volcano to be. Super huge and breathing fire, King Dodongo is a formidable foe.

History
Strategy
Ganondorf came to Goron City to aquire from Darunia the Spiritual Stone of Fire, the Goron's Ruby. Darunia refused to cough it up, sensing that Ganondorf was bad news. Ganondorf sent King Dodongo to Dodongo's Cavern, the Goron's feeding spot, and sealed it up with a giant boulder. Thereby, causing a famine on the Gorons. Ganondorf promised to open the cave and remove King Dodongo only if and when Darunia gave him the stone.OoT Darunia kept the Goron's Ruby safe and faced unpredictably difficult times for his people, when he received a visit from an unlikely Royal Messenger...OoT
While King Dodongo has an impressive stature, none of the attacks are very strong. Dodongo's primary attack comes when he breaths fire out at Link. These fire attacks are the opportunities Link is waiting for, as it requires Dodongo to first inhale some air, allowing Link to feed him a Bomb by throwing it in his open mouth. Doing so causes King Dodongo to be stunned momentarily, providing Link with the opportunity to attack him with a Jump Attack with Kokiri Sword, or by using a Deku Stick. The jump attack technique with the swords deals double the amount of damage.OoT

Strategy
King Dodongo will then curl up, preparing to roll around around the room In order to avoid King Dodongo's rolling attack, Link can stand on the slope inside the ring near the lava. Alternatively, he can tuck into a crouch in the corners of the arena behind the Bomb Flowers. Whenever King Dodongo rolls, it always goes halfway around the ring, bouncing off of one corner and stopping at the next. Once it rolls past, Link can follow close behind him. After, Link can repeat the process by throwing another Bomb. In the instance that Link runs out of Bombs, Bomb Flowers are available in every corner of the arena. Unlike many other bosses in Ocarina of Time, there is no "second-phase" to this battle. Once Link strikes the final blow, King Dodongo roars before rolling into the lava in the middle of the room. A Heart Container appears by his head along with a portal that is waiting to send Link to the outside Dodongo's Cavern. At this point, the lava has hardened and cooled to rock, so Link can walk on it.
Really big and really buff, King Dodongo looks like business. He'll let out a roar and the battle will begin. First thing to go over is how to avoid all his attacks. What to do if he does anything: stand on the sloped inside of the ring near the lava. That's it. He can't get you there with fire or rolling. Anyways, back to the battle: He'll begin with a fire attack. These fire attacks are Link's big opportunities. Before he exhales flame, he'll inhale. A lot. That's Link's queue to feed him a bomb. Toss one right in his mouth and his body will shudder with the explosion. While he's lying on the ground, nail him with a jump-attack-Deku Stick to the face (A plain Sword attack will work too, but a jump attack with a Deku Stick will dish out four times normal damage).OoT He'll then curl up, getting ready to roll around. At that point, Link needs to get on the sloped inside of the ring near the lava or get smooshed. Whenever King Dodongo rolls, he always goes halfway around the ring. He'll bounce off one corner and stop at the next. Once he rolls past, have Link follow close behind him. Because once he's done rolling, he'll face Link and try once again to roast him. Chuck a bomb in his mouth as before and slice him up good. (Again, use Deku Sticks and jump attacks for maximum efficiency) Should you run out of bombs mid-battle, use the bomb flowers placed in every corner of the arena. Using these will take timing though so try to make your own last. Unlike many other bosses in Ocarina of Time, there is no "second-phase" to this battle. Once you strike the final blow, King Dodongo will roar, roll around a bit and then roll into the lava in the middle of the room. He will straighten out as he sinks and let out one last roar before finally ceasing movement. A heart container will appear by his head along with a portal that is waiting to whisk Link away to the outside of Dodongo's Cavern. At this point the lava has hardened and cooled to rock so don't be afraid to walk on it. Once Link has stepped into the portal, he will be taken to the spot where the giant boulder stood at the entrance to Dodongo's Cavern. Darunia will then drop from the sky right in front of Link (???) and congratulate him on a job well done. He will then give him the second Spiritual Stone, the Goron's Ruby.

Reward
Reward
Link will get a heart container from King Dodongo, and after stepping into the portal, the Spiritual Stone of Fire from Darunia, that is, the Goron's Ruby.
Once Link has stepped into the portal, he is taken to the spot where the giant boulder stood at the entrance to Dodongo's Cavern. Darunia drops from the sky right in front of Link and congratulates him on a job well done, as well as making them Sworn Brothers, a title which shows Darunia's thanks to Link for helping his people. And to symbolize their new brotherhood, Darunia gives Link the second Spiritual Stone, the Goron's Ruby.
