Heart Containers have been appearing since the first Zelda game and have been Link's faithful companion for a long time. After killing a boss of a temple you will be rewarded with a Heart Container. Picking one up increases Links total amount of hearts by one.
Pieces of Heart
Main article: Piece of Heart
If you collect 4 heart pieces(5 in Twilight Princess) it will create a heart container. Pieces of Hearts can be found by completing side quests, mini games, and finding them in various dungeons and overworld areas.
