It is required, along with the Deku Shield, to gain access to the grove in which the Great Deku Tree grows. The weapon possesses modest strength and can only be used by child Link, however the fact that it is the only one of the three swords that child Link can utilize means that it is an invaluable asset during the earlier portions of the hero's quest.
