Major Characters

Child Link

Adult Link

Princess Zelda

Ganondorf

Sheik

Sheik is a mysterious character who first appears before Link when he wakes from his seven year slumber in the Temple of Time. He presents himself as a member of the Sheikah race, having spent the last seven years during Link's absence spying on Ganondorf and aiding all resistance against him, including freeing Ruto when she was frozen in the Ice Cavern. When he approaches Link upon waking, Sheik confirms that Link is indeed the Hero of Time and informs him that he must awaken the Five Sages in order to defeat Ganondorf. He points Link towards the first Temple in Kokiri Forest, also telling him he must first retrieve an item in Kakariko Village.

From that point on, Sheik often appears right before Link enters a Temple in order to teach him the warp songs associated with each Temple. He appears in the Sacred Forest Meadow to teach the Minuet of Forest, at the Temple of Time afterwards to teach the Prelude of Light and allow Link access to the Pedestal of Time, in Death Mountain Crater to teach the Bolero of Fire, by Kakariko's well to teach the Nocturn of Shadow, and in front of the Spirit Temple to teach the Requiem of Spirit. It is notable that at Kakariko's well, before teaching Link the warp song, Sheik had been attempting to prevent Bongo Bongo's spirit from escaping the well. However, Bongo Bongo proved to be too strong for both Sheik and Link, taking them by surprise and fleeing to the Shadow Temple. Before teaching the song, Sheik asked Link to go assist Impa, who had journeyed to the Temple to reseal Bongo Bongo.

After awakening all five Sages, Link returns to the Temple of Time to find Sheik waiting for him there. Sheik then reveals he is actually Princess Zelda. She had disguised herself as a male Sheikah to avoid detection by Ganondorf's forces. She presents the Light Arrows to Link, the only weapon that can defeat Ganondorf, but having shed her disguise, she is quickly found and captured by Ganondorf's magic. Her Sheik disguise is not used again in the game.

Navi

Navi is Link's fairy companion throughout the game, giving him hints and advice on what to do or where to go, as well as acting as his Z-button target mechanism. She has annoyed many players with her constant cries of "Hey!", "Listen!", "Look!", and "Watch out!" She will often fly over nearby secrets and change colors to alert Link. When talked to in battle, she will give information on the monster being fought and sometimes hints on how to beat it.

She was summoned by the Great Deku Tree in the beginning of the game to act as Link's fairy partner and bring the young boy to him. After the events that transpired inside the Great Deku Tree, Navi leaves Kokiri Forest with Link to help him on his adventure. She initially sees Link as a lazy child, doubting that he can really be the Hero Hyrule needs. However, as Link's journey progresses, the two grow to be very close.

Once Link ascends Ganon's Castle and confronts Ganondorf, Ganondorf's aura of evil is so strong that Navi is prevented from helping Link during the first stage of the battle. When Ganondorf transforms into his monstrous Ganon form, Navi is determined not to let him hold her back and is able to assist Link in the final showdown. Upon defeating Ganondorf and traveling back in time, Navi departs through a window in the Master Sword Chamber of the Temple of Time. Her reason for leaving is never explained.

Minor Characters

Fado

Fado is a female Kokiri who has a distinct look from the rest of the Kokiri children. Early on in the game she can be found on a higher platform in the center of the forest. You can reach her by climbing up the ramp near Saria’s house and walking across two rope bridges. She applauds you for reaching her at this higher platform and refers to Link as being a ‘real man’. She gives you some instructional tips on how to use the C-up button as a camera.

Fado can be found within the Lost Woods when Link is an adult and she plays a part in the Trading Sequence. Link returns to the Lost Woods in search of Grog, but he is nowhere to be found. Instead, Link will find Fado near a tree stump. Fado states that everyone who enters the Lost Woods will eventually become lost and turn into Stalfos. After seeing the Odd Potion, she states that this potion is native to the Kokiri Forest and it must be returned. In exchange for the Odd Potion, Fado will give Link the Poachers Saw, an item left behind by Grog.

Know-It-All-Brothers

The Know-It-All-Brothers are three Kokiri boys who serve as guides on how to use some of the basic functions in the game. Their house is located at the west end of Kokiri Forest, near the Forest Training Center. One of the boys will teach you about the various icons at the top of the screen. Another boy will teach you about the map and the three different types of items; equipment items, C-Button items, and Quest items. The third brother will teach you how to use the C-up button to talk to Navi, and to change the camera view.

The three brothers never leave the house throughout most of Link’s adventure. Even when Link returns to Kokiri Forest as an adult, the three brothers are still in their small house. None of the brothers recognize Link when he come back as an adult, and they state that they are awaiting the return of Link.

It isn’t until the end credits that the brothers finally leave the house. They can be seen at Lon Lon Ranch during the End Credits celebration. Strangely enough, the Kokiri children all seem to be perfectly fine in Lon Lon Ranch, even though it is stated that the Kokiri children cannot leave the Kokiri Forest or else they will die.

Kokiri Twins

The Kokiri Twins live in the east end of the Kokiri Forest, inside of the house that is conveniently titled, House of Twins. One of the twins is found inside of the house and if you speak to her, she tells you about the different types of rupees. The second twin is found within the Kokiri Forest Shop. She gives you the hint that most the items for sale in the shop can be found for free within the Forest. She also gives you some instructions on how to use the Deku Shield. Both of the twins will be in their same locations when Link returns as an adult. They don’t recognize Link, and if you speak to them, they are both awaiting the return of Link and Saria.

While these two are the actual residents of the House of Twins, there are a total of five female Kokiri who have the identical visual appearance.

Saria

Saria is a kind-hearted Kokiri girl who many of the other Kokiri look up to. Her fairy companion is pink in color. She is Link’s best friend and their close bond elicits resentment and jealousy from another one of the Kokiri, Mido. Saria is the first to greet and congratulate Link upon his receiving Navi as a fairy partner. When she finds out that Link is leaving the Kokiri Forest, she meets him at the entrance and gives him her Fairy Ocarina as a token to remember her by, sad to see him go. When Link later returns to the forest during the early stages of his quest, he follows the sound of Saria’s music through the Lost Woods and finds her at the Sacred Forest Meadow. She teaches him Saria’s Song, a catchy tune that allows him to speak telepathically with her whenever he plays it. She often gives Link hints to help him on his quest when contacted in this manner.

When Link returns to the Kokiri Forest as an adult, he learns that Saria has gone to the Forest Temple to investigate the cause of the sudden monster infestations in the forest. However, Saria was trapped by the monsters in the Temple and Link must fight his way through the Temple to save her. Upon defeating Phantom Ganon, Saria awakens as the Sage of Forest, telling Link that as a Sage she cannot accompany him, but will continue to help him along his quest, urging him to accept his fate. Mido later reveals that Saria had really liked Link, possibly as a crush though this is unconfirmed. She later helps Link during his trek through Ganon's Castle when all the sages create the rainbow bridge up to his Castle, and she dispells the Forest Barrier inside.

Saria is last seen in the credits overlooking Hyrule with the other sages on Death Mountain.

Mido

Mido is the boss of the Kokiri in Kokiri Forest. Early in the game, He prevents Child Link to see the Great Deku Tree unless he has a Sword and a Shield. When Link acquires the Sword from the Forest Training Center and the Shield from the Kokiri Shop, then he will reluctantly let Link pass through to see the Great Deku Tree. Later on, he blamed Link for the death of the Great Deku Tree without even listening to him. Later when Link returns as an Adult, he is found in the Lost Woods, guarding the entrance towards the Maze near the Forest Temple. Only when Link plays Saria's Song will he let him pass. He also wants to see Link and Saria again, and to apologize to Link for how he had treated him.

Ruto

Princess of the Zoras and caretaker of the Zoras’ patron deity Lord Jabu-Jabu, Princess Ruto is a rather spoiled and sassy young lady with a rebellious attitude towards her father King Zora. Link first learns of Princess Ruto when he finds a message in a bottle that she supposedly wrote asking for help as she had been swallowed by Lord Jabu-Jabu. When Link gets swallowed as well, he finds Ruto safe and sound inside, claiming that she enters Lord Jabu-Jabu all the time. She tells Link that she has lost her treasure, the Zora Sapphire, and demands he accompanies her in search of it. She is captured once she finds the Sapphire, and Link must defeat Barinade to free her. After being saved, she is so impressed with Link that she quite quickly falls in love and declares them engaged by giving him her Sapphire, which is supposed to be her engagement ring.

As an adult, Ruto has become far more mature and responsible. She was trapped in the Ice Cavern when Zora’s Domain freezes over, but after being saved by Sheik she heads for the Water Temple to try and save her people. Link meets up with her again inside the Temple, and she still remembers the engagement. While trying to assist Link in the Temple, Ruto suddenly disappears, only to later awaken as the Sage of Water upon Link’s triumph over the Temple’s boss. In light of her new duties, she cuts off her engagement to Link at that time. She continues to help Link during his trek through Ganon's Castle when all the sages create the rainbow bridge up to his Castle, and she dispells the Water Barrier inside.

Ruto is last seen in the credits overlooking Hyrule with the other sages on Death Mountain.

Goron Link

Goron Link is a member of the Goron race and the son of the Goron Patriarch Darunia. Goron Link is first found rolling around the main centre of the Goron City located within Death Mountain. When you place a bomb or bombchu in his path he will stop mistaking you for one of Ganondorf’s men. Very quickly it becomes apparent to him that you are the “legendary Dodongo Buster” from seven years earlier that he was named after.

After this revelation Goron Link informs you of the kidnapping of the Gorons from Goron City and the resurrection of the evil dragon Volvagia by Ganondorf. He tells you of Darunia’s mission to save the Gorons from Volvagia prompting you to follow suit. Goron Link reveals the secret path to Death Mountain Crater and therefore the Fire Temple located within his father’s room at the base of Goron City. He will also give you the Goron Tunic which is used by Link to withstand the extreme heat found within both Death Mountain Crater and the Fire Temple.

After you save the Gorons, defeat Volvagia and awaken Darunia as a Sage return to Goron City, where you will be thanked by Goron Link.

Impa

Impa is the last member of the Sheikah race, a race of warriors sworn to protecting the Royal Family of Hyrule. She was born in Kakariko Village, originally a Sheikah village, before Impa opened the village up to non-Sheikah entry. Prior to the events of Ocarina of Time, Impa was responsible for sealing the evil spirit Bongo Bongo away into the bottom of the Well of Three Features.

Link first meets Impa when leaving the courtyard of Hyrule Castle after meeting with Princess Zelda. Impa is Zelda’s bodyguard and teaches Link Zelda’s Lullaby before directing him to his next destination in Kakariko Village. Later in the game, when Ganondorf attacks Hyrule Castle Town, Impa takes Princess Zelda and the two escape on a white horse riding away from the Castle.

As an adult, Link witnesses Bongo Bongo escape his entrapment in the Well and flee to the Shadow Temple, which Link enters to chase the evil spirit down. Upon defeating Bongo Bongo, Impa is awakened as the Spirit of Shadow. She asks Link to protect Princess Zelda on her behalf. Impa later helps Link during his trek through Ganon's Castle when all the sages create the rainbow bridge up to his Castle, and she dispells the Shadow Barrier inside.

Impa is last seen in the credits overlooking Hyrule with the other sages on Death Mountain.

Nabooru

As the second in command of the Gerudo Thieves, Nabooru wields a great deal of respect among the Gerudo society. She has her headquarters in the Spirit Temple. Her only superior is Ganondorf himself, who she hates for his evil ways, citing his thievery and murder as unacceptable. She plans to infiltrate the interior of the Spirit Temple to find a treasure she can use to mess up Ganondorf’s plans, but she needs the Silver Gauntlets first. Link first meets her when he travels to the Spirit Temple as a child. Nabooru cannot fit through the passage to the half of the Temple that houses the Gauntlets, so she promises Link something great if he retrieves them for her. Link agrees, but when he returns with the Gauntlets, he sees Nabooru being captured by the twin witches Koume and Kotake.

When he returns to the Spirit Temple and uses the Silver Gauntlets as an adult, Link finds and defeats a particularly powerful Iron Knuckle right before the boss room. When the armor falls off, it is revealed that the Iron Knuckle was actually Nabooru, having been brainwashed by Koume and Kotake. The two witches appear immediately and teleport her away again, and in order to save her Link must defeat the twin witches. Upon successfully taking down Twinrova, Nabooru awakens as the Sage of Spirit and comments that if she had known how handsome a man Link would become, she would have kept that promise she made to him as a child. She later helps Link during his trek through Ganon's Castle when all the sages create the rainbow bridge up to his Castle, and she dispells the Spirit Barrier inside.

Nabooru is last seen in the credits overlooking Hyrule with the other sages on Death Mountain.

Malon

Malon is a farm girl who works and lives in Lon Lon Ranch with her father Talon and her uncle Ingo. She has red hair and pointed Hylian ears, dressed in simple farm clothes and brown boots, and as an easter egg from Nintendo, she also wears a Bowser pin. Link first meets Malon when he reaches Hyrule Castle Town for the first time, and she calls him "Fairy Boy" because of Navi. She tells Link she hasn't seen her father in a while and asks Link to look for him, giving Link a weird egg and sends him on his way. The eggs hatches into a Cucco which crows to wake Talon up when Link find him sleeping by the back door to Hyrule Castle. Malon then returns to the ranch with Talon and can be found there throughout the game. She has a special bond with Epona the horse, and she teaches Link Epona's Song, a song her dead mother composed, which allows Link to bond with and summon Epona to his location when he is an adult. When Epona's Song is played to a cow, it will fill a empty bottle with Lon Lon milk. Malon often sings Epona's Song and can be heard singing at Lon Lon Ranch day and night.

When Link returns to Lon Lon Ranch seven years later, Ingo has taken over and Talon is gone. Malon, however, is still working there because she fears the mistreatment of the animals. After Link beats Ingo at the horse race and escapes the ranch with Epona, Ingo becomes much nicer and Talon comes back to run the ranch. Malon thanks Link for all his help, entrusts Epona to his care, and can be challenged to a horse race. If Link beats Malon in a horse race, she gives Link a cow to keep in his home in the Kokiri Forest. This cow can supply Link with Lon Lon milk.

Talon

Talon is the owner of Lon Lon Ranch. He slightly resembles Mario from the Mario series as an easter egg (since Ingo slightly resembles Luigi). He is a rather portly fellow, sporting a bald head and mustache, wearing jean overalls, a red undershirt, brown boots and as another easter egg, a bowser pin like Malon's. He seems to be very lazy and sleeps almost all the day and all the night. His daughter is Malon whom he entrusts the horse Epona to.

Link first meets Talon sleeping outside the back door to Hyrule Castle, having fallen asleep while delivering milk. Link wakes him up with a cucco given to him by Malon, and Talon wakes up with a jolt, rushing back to the ranch. At the ranch, Talon will let Link play the Super Cucco-findin' Game, where Link must find the three special cuccos before the time limit runs out. Success nets Link a bottle of milk, and some joking from Talon about if Link wants to marry Malon.

After the seven years Link is sealed, Talon is kicked off the ranch by his brother Ingo. He can be found sleeping in a house in Kakariko Village, and can be woken by the Pocket Cucco as part of the Trading Sequence. When Link frees the ranch, Talon no longer sleeps all the time and says he will turn over a new leaf, returning to the ranch to work hard.

Ingo

Ingo is Talon's Brother and Malon's uncle. He slightly resembles Luigi from the Mario series as an easter egg (since Talon slightly resembles Mario). He is portrayed as being skinny and having a large black mustache, wearing pink overalls with a green shirt underneath. When Link first meets him at Lon Lon Ranch, he is grumpy and complains about doing all the work for Talon, who he believes is lazy.

After seven years have passed Ingo has ranch ownership and kicked Talon out, forcing Malon to do the hard work. After Link beats him at a horse race, Ingo turns evil, trapping Link and Epona at the ranch. Link and Epona easily escape by jumping the fence, and when they return, Ingo's personality has changed. He seems to be happy and grateful that he works under Talon.

Darunia

Darunia is the Patriarch, or leader, of the Goron Race. He comes across at tough and rude at first, but this is due to the stress caused by Dondongo Cavern being blocked up and his people starving, Ganondorf's punishment for Darunia refusing to hand over the Goron Ruby.

When Link enters Darunia's room using Zelda's Lullaby, Darunia assumed him a messenger from the Royal Family. Irritated that Link was not, Darunia refused to assist Link. However, Link manages to lift Darunia's mood and make him dance by playing Saria's Song for him. Darunia gives Link the Goron Bracelet and asks him to clear the evil from Dondongo's Cavern. Upon completing the task, Link is made a Sworn Brother and is given the Goron Ruby.

As an adult, Link returns to Goron City to find all the inhabitants imprisoned by the evil dragon Volvagia. Link meets up with Darunia in the Fire Temple, and Darunia heads into Volvagia's chamber to confront the monster, determined to slay the beast even though he lacks the legendary Megaton Hammer. Darunia fails, though Link manages to succeed after finding the hammer, and upon defeating Volvagia he awakens Darunia as the Sage of Fire. Darunia remarks once again that he and Link are true Brothers. He later helps Link during his trek through Ganon's Castle when all the sages create the rainbow bridge up to his Castle, and he dispells the Fire Barrier inside.

Succeeding to do so results in another Piece of Heart. Skull Kids appear to have no face, so they wear masks of some sort. Their clothes look very forest like, possibly being made out of leaves and bark.

Another Skull Kid appears in the Mask Trading Sequence. He says he is sad he has no face and wishes for a mask. Link gives him one, but he only pays 10 rupees, making Link pay the other ten.

He requests Link enter the interior of the tree to remove the curse. Though Link successfully defeats Gohma and removes the curse, the Great Deku Tree is still doomed to die. Before dying, he tells Link the legend of how the Golden Goddesses created Hyrule and the Triforce, and how Ganondorf plans to use the Spiritual Stones to open the Door of Time to take the Triforce for himself. The Deku Tree sprout is the baby form of the Great Deku Tree. He appears after Link defeats Phantom Ganon in the Forest Temple and awakens Saria as the Forest Sage. He was unable to grow before this due to Ganondorf's evil reign over Hyrule corrupting the Kokiri Forest, spawning enemies in the sacred Forest. Ingo was going to give Epona as a gift to Ganondorf since she is the fastest horse at the ranch. Malon remained at the ranch to protect the animals, but Talon had been exiled. Ingo challenges Link to a horse race, but Link is able to win with Epona, who recognizes him by Epona's Song. After Link wins, Ingo tries to lock Link and Epona in the ranch, though they both escape by jumping the fence that prevents them from exiting. When Link returns to the ranch he finds everything back to normal.

They are a group of five frogs that sing together in a choir, which Link can conduct with his Ocarina. The frogs are first encountered in Zora's River. If Link plays his Ocarina while standing on the tree stump these frogs will pop up. Playing one of the normal songs, will cause one of them to grow and give Link 50 Rupees as a reward per frog. Also, each song will lead the corresponding frog to grow. Link can also play the "Song of Storms" for them in order to obtain a Piece of Heart.

After they have grown and the Piece of Heart mentioned above has been obtained, Link can conduct the fully-grown frogs. Each frog represents one of the C-buttons or the A-button. When a fly appears above a frog, Link must quickly press the button representing that frog. Once this has been done without fail, completing their song, he will be given a last Piece of Heart.

He will be disappointed that he cannot eat the frog for dinner, but makes the drops regardless. He was once the teacher of Granny, the potion maker of Kakariko Village.

Kaepora Gaebora

Keapora Geabora is a very knowledgeable, very loquacious owl that helps Link during his adventure in Ocarina of Time. He can rotate his head upside-down, causing the markings on his face to resemble another face. According to a gossip stone, he is the reincarnation of an ancient sage, and according to another he is very lighthearted, despite his size.

He first appears directly after leaving Kokiri Forest, telling Link about the map and pointing him towards Hyrule Castle. He appears numerous other times throughout the game in Link's childhood, giving Link advice and knowledge about his quest as well as directions. He is last seen flying over the Desert Colossus when Sheik teaches Link the Requiem of Spirit as an adult.

Koume and Kotake

Koume and Kotake are a pair of Gerudo twin witches with elemental powers, Koume having power over fire and Kotake having power over ice. They act as Ganondorf's surrogate mothers and are very loyal to him.

Link first encounters them as a child at the Desert Colossus when they kidnap Nabooru before Link can hand over the Silver Gauntlets. They then retreat into the interior of the Spirit Temple. Link next sees them after defeating the Iron Knuckle situated right before the boss room in the Spirit Temple as an adult. They had brainwashed Nabooru to serve Ganondorf, making her fight as the Iron Knuckle. When Nabooru tries to escape the two witches teleport her away to be brainwashed again, then they taunt Link before leading him into the boss chamber.

The two witches act as the boss for the Spirit Temple. They fly around the stage trying to hit Link with their elemental magic, and he must defeat them by reflecting one witches magic to hit the other. After a while, the two witches will transform into a single entity, Twinrova, who looks younger, is larger, and wields both elemental powers of fire and ice. Link must defeat her by using her own magic against her.

When defeated, Twinrova splits back into Koume and Kotake. Halos appear over both of their heads and the two begin bickering about their age as they float upwards into rays of light. They curse at Link one last time before disappearing.

Huff huff! I'm late! I'm late! For a very important date!

Twins in Kakariko Village

The Twins reside in Hyrule Castle Town. Upon Link's first arrival in Hyrule Castle Town, the two are talking about an attempt one of the Twins made on breaking into Hyrule Castle, effectively revealing the way to get ahead to Link. Shortly before Link's arrival, the twin dressed in blue attempted to sneak into the castle to meet Princess Zelda. He sneaked past the Royal Guard, swam through the moat, and tried to crawl through the drain hole on the side of the castle, but he could not enter it due to his size. As a result of this, the castle guards tightened security in the castle. Link later uses this knowledge to his advantage.

When Ganondorf takes over Hyrule, the Twins retreat to Kakariko Village, where they stay in different houses. Here one of the Twins claims to have seen the ghost of the grave keeper Dampé holding a strange object. The other does not believe him and states that the other Twin is still as hilarious as back in Castle Town.

Running Man

The "running man" is a man seen running around Hyrule Field (around the Ranch to be more specific) when Link obtains the Bunny Hood to try to sell. He says that he wants to be as fast as a rabbit. When shown the Bunny Hood, he freaks and fills Link's wallet to buy it, no matter how many more rupees Link's wallet can hold. (Meaning he will pay up to 500 rupees for that mask!) When morning breaks, the "running man" takes off so fast that it knocks Link down if he is near him. He is seen running along Hyrule for the rest of the game, so long as Link is a child. As an adult, Link can race him from the Gerudo Valley to the Kokiri Forest, but he always beats Link by one second.

Rauru

Rauru is the Sage of Light who resides inside the Chamber of Sages. He is the first to greet Link after Link awakens from his seven year slumber. It is implied that he may be immortal or otherwise long lived, as it is revealed that he was one of the Ancient Sages who helped construct the Temple of Time.

When Link awakens in the Chamber of Sages, Rauru explains to Link that he had been sealed away for seven years due to having been too young to bear the title Hero of Time when he pulled the Master Sword. He also explains that Ganondorf had entered the Sacred Realm and touched the Triforce, receiving the Triforce of Power as a result and taking over Hyrule. Rauru informs Link that he must awaken the five other Sages in order to defeat Ganondorf, then transports Link back to the Temple of Time to continue on his journey.

Rauru can communicate via telepathy, calling Link back to the Temple of Time after he awakened all five other sages. He later helps Link during his trek through Ganon's Castle when all the sages create the rainbow bridge up to his Castle, and he dispells the Light Barrier inside.

It is notable that Rauru was not with the other Sages on Death Mountain overlooking Hyrule at the end of the game. It is implied that he may not be able to leave the Chamber of Sages.

Windmill Man

The Windmill Man spends the entire game inside Kakariko Village's windmill playing his grinder organ. The man seems to have quite the temper problem and is involved in what fans dub the "Song of Storms Paradox". When Link visits him as a child, the Windmill Man is cheerfully trying to write a song inspired by the motion of the windmill. When Link visits him as an adult, the Windmill Man is considerably aggravated and complains that a child with an ocarina "messed up the windmill" seven years prior. When Link shows him his Ocarina, the Windmill Man becomes even more agitated, having been reminded of the song, and plays the Song of Storms angrily, effectively teaching Link the song. Should Link visit the Windmill Man again as a child and play the Song of Storms, the windmill will speed up considerably and drain the Well.
